U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the figure is the highest in the Border Patrol’s 102-year history, as the agency works toward a goal of 25,000 agents

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it has reached a record staffing level this spring, with 21,471 Border Patrol agents now serving — what the agency described as the highest in the Border Patrol’s 102-year history.

“This record-setting achievement highlights the effectiveness of our recruitment efforts,” said U.S. Border Patrol Chief Rosario “Pete” Vasquez. Vasquez said the agency is building a stronger workforce and is working toward a goal of 25,000 agents.

According to CBP, the agency offers competitive salaries, benefits, and hiring incentives of up to $60,000 for new Border Patrol agents in eligible locations. The agency said a CBP career offers a long-term professional path focused on border security and public service.

“Our focus is on bringing in top talent and supporting our agents so they can succeed,” said CBP Office of Human Resources Management Assistant Commissioner Andrea Bright, who said surpassing 21,000 agents is a milestone but that the agency intends to keep growing its workforce.

CBP said investments made possible through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act have increased applicant interest and helped it attract recruits, including veterans and military family members. The agency said it offers Veterans’ Preference, expedited hiring authorities, and recruitment incentives to help veterans move into federal careers.
