AUSTIN — Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas, Inc. will expand its San Antonio manufacturing operations with a second vehicle assembly line, doubling its production footprint at the site in a $3.6 billion capital investment expected to create 2,000 new jobs, Governor Greg Abbott’s office announced Monday.
According to the governor’s office, the state extended two incentive packages to Toyota as part of the deal: a Texas Enterprise Fund grant of $20 million, and a $50,000 Veteran Created Job Bonus. The project also qualifies for benefits under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation program, known as JETI, according to the governor’s office.
Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas has operated in San Antonio since 2003, primarily building the full-size Tundra pickup truck at the plant. The expansion announced Monday would double the facility’s manufacturing footprint. The specific vehicle to be produced on the new assembly line was not detailed in the governor’s release.
“Texas is where the world builds bigger, and Toyota shows it once more with a $3.6 billion expansion in San Antonio that doubles their factory footprint and creates 2,000 new jobs,” Abbott said in a statement. “This Texas-sized investment reflects the strength of our workforce and the unmatched business advantages found only in our state. Supported by the Texas Enterprise Fund and JETI program, this expansion will deliver economic opportunities to generations of San Antonio families and further cement Texas as the premier destination for world-class advanced manufacturing.”
The Texas Enterprise Fund is the state’s deal-closing incentive program, established in 2003 to attract major corporate expansions and relocations. Grants are typically structured with job creation and capital investment benchmarks that companies must meet to receive full payment. The JETI program provides property tax value limitations for large qualifying projects and replaced the previous Chapter 313 economic development program.
The governor’s release did not include a projected timeline for the expansion’s completion, wage levels for the 2,000 new jobs, or details about the specific vehicles the new assembly line will produce. A response from Toyota executives beyond the governor’s announcement was not included.
