WASHINGTON, D.C. – During his second-term inauguration on Monday, President Donald Trump announced plans to strengthen border security. He praised Texas Governor Greg Abbott as a critical partner in addressing immigration issues.

Speaking at the Capitol Rotunda, Trump outlined measures including declaring a national emergency, deploying military forces to the southern border, reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers, and accelerating border wall construction. He referred to Abbott as a “leader” in border security and pledged ongoing collaboration.

“Now that you have a new president, that wall will go up so fast,” Trump said.

Texas’ Border Initiatives

Texas, with over 1,200 miles of border with Mexico, has already implemented state-led measures under Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, including National Guard deployments and state-funded wall construction. Trump stated that federal efforts would build on these actions, incorporating “unprecedented military engagement.”

Abbott expressed support in a letter to Trump, stating, “For too long, Texas has fought to secure the border in the face of federal obstruction. I look forward to ending this crisis with your help.”

Trump announced additional executive actions, including efforts to end birthright citizenship, deport undocumented immigrants, and repeal diversity and inclusion programs.

Trump also acknowledged increased support from Hispanic and Black voters in South Texas and other areas. “Hispanic Americans believe in the promise of the American Dream—hard work, family, and opportunity,” Trump said.

Texans in Key Roles

Several Texans were named to prominent positions in Trump’s Cabinet:

  • Former Texas state Rep. Scott Turner as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
  • Brooke Rollins, a former aide to Gov. Rick Perry, as Secretary of Agriculture.
  • Former U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe as CIA Director.
  • Houston billionaire Tilman Fertitta as Ambassador to Italy.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who recently relocated to Texas, will head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency, serving as an advisor to streamline federal operations.

Despite the cold weather, hundreds of Texans went to Washington, D.C., to attend the inauguration and related events. Several thousand participated in a Texas-themed black-tie gala organized by the Texas State Society on Sunday evening. The event was attended by numerous members of Congress, including Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, as well as Governor Greg Abbott, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, and Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright.

The inauguration marked the beginning of Trump’s second term, with a focus on immigration policy and key roles for Texans in shaping his administration’s agenda.
