Southeast Texas Has Been Hiding One of the Best Festivals in the State — Right on the River

Formula 1 powerboat racing at speeds up to 120 mph, live concerts, carnival rides, fireworks, a pet show, a car show, and five days of Gulf Coast community fun — Port Neches RiverFest kicks off Wednesday, April 29.

Most Texans drive right past Southeast Texas on their way somewhere else. That’s a mistake — and Port Neches RiverFest is one of the best reasons to correct it. For five days every spring, this small Gulf Coast city turns its riverfront park into one of the most complete community festivals in the state, anchored by something you absolutely cannot find anywhere else in Southeast Texas: Formula 1 powerboat racing on the Neches River.

RiverFest 2026 runs April 29 through May 3 at Port Neches RiverFront Park. Wednesday kicks off with Faith and Family Night, and the festival builds to a full weekend of racing, concerts, carnival, and fireworks. This one has been flying under the radar for too long.

The Star of the Show — Thunder on the Neches

Two full days of F1 Powerboat Championship racing is what sets RiverFest apart from every other community festival in Texas. Four classes of boats — F1, Formula Lights, Tri-Hull, and Talent Cup — tear down the Neches River at speeds up to 120 miles per hour in what the IHRA F1 Powerboat Championship series calls one of the loudest and most energetic stops on the tour.

These are not just fast boats. This is a legitimate national motorsports championship event happening in a small riverfront park in Southeast Texas, with packed grandstand seats and the kind of crowd noise that only comes when something incredible is happening right in front of you. If you’ve never watched Formula 1 powerboat racing, this is the place to do it.

Five Days of Everything Else

Beyond the boats, RiverFest packs the full five days with enough activity to keep every member of the family busy from Wednesday through Sunday. The carnival runs along the riverfront with rides and games. Live music fills multiple nights with regional and national acts. Food vendors cover everything from festival classics to Gulf Coast favorites. A Classic Car Show and Motorcycle Show take over the park on Saturday. The Local Talent Show gives the community its own stage. The Pet Show — one of RiverFest’s most beloved traditions — brings out the best-dressed and best-behaved four-legged residents of Southeast Texas. A Horseshoe Tournament, Washer Board Shoot-Out, and two-day Fishing Tournament round out a competitive lineup for those who want more than just spectating. The spectacular fireworks display Saturday night lights up the Neches River in a finale that draws crowds from across the region.

A Community Festival With Decades of Heart

RiverFest is presented by Neches Federal Credit Union and has been a cornerstone of the Port Neches community calendar for generations. Port Neches sits just east of Port Arthur on the Neches River, about 90 minutes from Houston and 30 minutes from Beaumont — close enough for a day trip, worth staying the weekend for. The riverfront setting gives the festival a natural beauty and a Gulf Coast energy that purpose-built festival grounds simply can’t replicate.

“See Ya at the River” is more than a tagline here. It’s an invitation from a community that genuinely loves where it lives and wants to share it.

Tickets and Getting There

Wednesday admission is $10. Friday and Saturday admission is $15 per day. Weekend passes are $30 — the best deal if you’re planning to be there for the racing and the Saturday night fireworks. Pre-purchase your weekend admission and carnival pass before the festival opens to save at the gate. Once RiverFest kicks off, only daily tickets are available on-site.
