From Houston’s 44-location Unearth a Story challenge to San Antonio’s collectible Paleta bookmarks, Austin’s free dino puppet shows, and a Harris County program giving away a bicycle at every single branch — Texas public libraries are running some of the most rewarding summer programs in the country. And they’re all free.
Summer in Texas means heat, pools, and the very real possibility of watching a lot of TV for three months. Texas libraries have a better idea. This summer, public library systems across the state are running free summer reading programs that reward kids, teens, and adults for doing something the research consistently shows matters — reading. The prizes are real. The events are free. And all it takes is a library card and a book.
Houston Public Library — Unearth a Story, June 1 through July 31
Houston Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program runs across all 44 locations through July 31 with a theme built around discovery, imagination, and digging into great stories. Unearth a Story invites Houstonians of all ages to read, explore the library, and earn rewards as they go — with fun activities, special events, unforgettable characters, and surprises throughout the summer.
You don’t need a library card to join the Summer Reading Program, but you will need one to borrow books or access digital resources. Register on Beanstack to start logging reading, earn rewards at every milestone, and enter grand prize drawings.
Grand prizes include bikes courtesy of CYCLE Houston, Nintendo Switch Lite consoles, and Kindle Scribe and Fire Tablets. Prize drawings close August 5.

Why Summer Reading Matters
Research consistently shows that children who read regularly over summer maintain and advance their reading level — while those who don’t can lose up to three months of academic progress. Texas libraries remove every barrier they can: no cost, no commute beyond a neighborhood branch, no equipment required. The only thing needed is time and the willingness to read.
Every Texas public library participates in the statewide summer reading initiative. Find your nearest branch and registration details at tsl.texas.gov — the Texas State Library maintains a directory of all participating library systems statewide.
