Texas Libraries Are Giving Away Bikes, Nintendo Switches, Museum Memberships, and Free Books This Summer — All You Have to Do Is Read

From Houston’s 44-location Unearth a Story challenge to San Antonio’s collectible Paleta bookmarks, Austin’s free dino puppet shows, and a Harris County program giving away a bicycle at every single branch — Texas public libraries are running some of the most rewarding summer programs in the country. And they’re all free.

Summer in Texas means heat, pools, and the very real possibility of watching a lot of TV for three months. Texas libraries have a better idea. This summer, public library systems across the state are running free summer reading programs that reward kids, teens, and adults for doing something the research consistently shows matters — reading. The prizes are real. The events are free. And all it takes is a library card and a book.

Houston Public Library — Unearth a Story, June 1 through July 31

Houston Public Library’s 2026 Summer Reading Program runs across all 44 locations through July 31 with a theme built around discovery, imagination, and digging into great stories. Unearth a Story invites Houstonians of all ages to read, explore the library, and earn rewards as they go — with fun activities, special events, unforgettable characters, and surprises throughout the summer.

You don’t need a library card to join the Summer Reading Program, but you will need one to borrow books or access digital resources. Register on Beanstack to start logging reading, earn rewards at every milestone, and enter grand prize drawings.

Grand prizes include bikes courtesy of CYCLE Houston, Nintendo Switch Lite consoles, and Kindle Scribe and Fire Tablets. Prize drawings close August 5.

Program: June 1 – July 31, 2026 Registration: houstonlibrary.org/srp — free, no library card required to register All 44 Houston Public Library locations Supported by: McGovern Foundation

Harris County Public Library — Bikes at Every Branch

Harris County Public Library is giving away a bicycle to one lucky child at every HCPL branch this summer through a partnership with CYCLE Houston. Log reading on Beanstack to earn digital tickets for the bike prize drawing — all tickets must be entered by 11:59 p.m. on August 1, 2026. Winners will be contacted by August 8.

In partnership with the Houston Museum of Natural Science, one lucky family at each branch will also win a one-year Family Membership — good for up to six people with unlimited admission to permanent exhibit halls and discounts on other venues and programs.

Registration: hcpl.net/summer-reading-program — log reading on Beanstack Prize deadlines: Reading logged by June 30 for HMNS drawing / August 1 for bike drawing

San Antonio Public Library — Summer with SAPL, June 1 through July 31

San Antonio Public Library’s summer library program runs June 1 through July 31 with a full lineup of new activities for people of all ages. The program releases a new Summer with SAPL Paleta character every Monday from June 1 through July 20 — visit your local library each week to collect all eight limited-edition bookmarks while supplies last.

This is one of the most creative summer reading identity programs in Texas — eight collectible characters, eight weeks, eight reasons to keep showing up at your local branch. Registration and the full event calendar are available through the San Antonio Public Library website.

Austin Public Library — Unearth a Story, June 6 through August 8

Austin Public Library’s summer reading challenge runs June 6 through August 8, 2026. The goal is to read or be read to for 20-plus minutes per day — audiobooks count — or log a total of 600 minutes over the summer. Complete three activity badges and earn prizes.

Starting June 8, readers who reach their goal receive a free book for ages 0 to 17 and a free mug for adults — while supplies last at any Austin Public Library branch. Free dinosaur puppet shows and special events run all summer long at branches across the city.

The program is fully bilingual — all materials available in English and Spanish. Print challenge sheets are available at any branch for families who prefer to go low-tech.

Bryan and College Station Public Library — Art Contest Through July 15

The Bryan and College Station Public Library System is running the 2026 Unearth a Story summer reading challenge alongside a Summer Annual Art Contest. Artwork submissions are accepted July 1 through 15, with community voting to determine winners in each age category at each branch location. Artwork must be on an 11-by-8.5-inch piece of paper, unframed. Grand prizes include a one-year Family Membership to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, a walkie-talkie set, and an Anditoy Dinosaur Building Set for children; a Dino Goodie Bag featuring Jurassic Park movies for teens; and a Cozy Reading Basket for adults.

Texas State Library Talking Book Program — All Ages, June 15 through August 15

The Texas State Library’s Talking Book Program is running an all-ages summer reading program from June 15 through August 15, 2026, with this year’s theme focusing on paleontology, archeology, genealogy, and uncovering hidden stories. Themed book lists and matching activities run throughout the summer, with prizes available for reviewing books. Materials are available electronically, in large print, in braille, and in Spanish. Virtual events include a kickoff party and live author talks.

The first 50 participants who sign up receive a summer reading goody bag.

Joint Base San Antonio Libraries — Military Family Reading Challenge

Joint Base San Antonio Libraries is running a summer reading program across Randolph, Lackland, and Fort Sam Houston branches with an all-branches competition. The goal is to log 3,000,000 minutes read collectively across the installation. The Randolph Library Summer Reading Cup challenges offices to compete as teams, and the Lackland Library Group Challenge lets families and units log minutes together. July calendars are released June 18.

Branches: Randolph, Lackland, Fort Sam Houston July calendar release: June 18, 2026

Why Summer Reading Matters

Research consistently shows that children who read regularly over summer maintain and advance their reading level — while those who don’t can lose up to three months of academic progress. Texas libraries remove every barrier they can: no cost, no commute beyond a neighborhood branch, no equipment required. The only thing needed is time and the willingness to read.

Every Texas public library participates in the statewide summer reading initiative. Find your nearest branch and registration details at tsl.texas.gov — the Texas State Library maintains a directory of all participating library systems statewide.
