A brand-new, larger-than-life mural splashed across the Children’s Museum Houston celebrates curiosity, discovery, and the whole Museum District — right as the world arrives for the World Cup

The world is showing up in Houston this summer, and the city just rolled out a welcome mat you can spot from down the block. The Children’s Museum Houston pulled the curtain back on a brand-new mural that turns the whole front of the building into a burst of color — and it’s the official mural marking Houston’s moment in the FIFA World Cup spotlight.

Out of all the spots in Houston’s famous Museum District, the Children’s Museum got tapped to host the official artwork, chosen to stand in for the whole district and everything it represents. That’s a pretty big honor, and one look at the finished piece tells you why.

Houston artist Elizabeth “Liz” Umanzor created the large-scale mural, and she packed it with the kind of imagery that makes kids stop and point. Think fossils, sparkling crystals, butterflies, native Texas wildlife, bursts of creative expression, and even space exploration — a love letter to science, nature, art, and the thrill of discovery all rolled into one wall. Together, the pieces celebrate Houston as a global city where curiosity and big dreams get to run wild.

The timing couldn’t be sweeter. As athletes, fans, and visitors from around the planet pour into town for one of the world’s biggest sporting events, the mural greets them with a simple, joyful message: this is a place that believes in wonder and in the next generation that’ll carry it forward.

Here’s the best part for you, neighbor — you don’t need a World Cup ticket to enjoy it. The mural sits right near the heart of the Museum District, free to admire from the street any time you stroll by. Make a morning of it: snap a family photo in front of the artwork, then head inside for the hands-on exhibits the museum is famous for. Whether you’ve got little ones in tow or you just want to soak up some of that global-Houston energy, it’s a feel-good stop that won’t cost you a thing to see.

So next time you’re near Hermann Park or cruising through the Museum District, swing by and take it in. It’s a bright, joyful reminder that while the world’s eyes are on Houston for soccer this summer, the city’s real heart beats for curiosity, creativity, and kids dreaming big.

If You Go

The Children’s Museum Houston sits at 1500 Binz St., Houston, TX 77004, right in the Museum District near Hermann Park. The new World Cup mural is on the exterior of the building and free to view from the street anytime. Want to head inside? The museum is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. For admission prices, special events, and details, call 713-522-1138 or visit cmhouston.org.
