The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested more than 10,000 people it identifies as gang members during President Donald Trump’s second term.
According to DHS, the agency said those arrested had committed crimes including murder, assault with a deadly weapon, drug trafficking, racketeering, robbery, and extortion. The 10,000 figure and the gang affiliations are the agency’s own characterizations, which it did not break down further or independently document in the announcement.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, ICE has arrested more than 10,000 gang members,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who attributed many of the releases to the prior administration and said new legislation has expanded the agency’s ability to make such arrests.
DHS identified the 10,000th person arrested as Javier Hernandez Rosas, whom the agency described as an MS-13 member and a Mexican national. According to DHS, his record includes a conviction for cocaine possession and prior arrests for abduction and a weapons offense. Those arrests did not result in convictions noted by the agency, and an arrest is not a finding of guilt.
