The Sweetest Small-Town Party in Texas: De Leon’s Peach & Melon Festival Turns 100-Plus

One of the oldest festivals in the whole state throws a juicy August blowout — tractor pulls, a rodeo, dueling pianos, seed-spitting, free watermelon, and the kind of hometown pride you can’t fake

If you want to taste real Texas — the kind that’s been simmering for more than a century — point your truck toward the little town of De Leon this August. Tucked into Comanche County in Central Texas, this town of a couple thousand folks throws one of the oldest and sweetest festivals in the entire state, and you’re invited.

The De Leon Peach & Melon Festival has been going strong since the 1910s. That’s not a typo, neighbor — this celebration has welcomed generations of families, dished out free melon, and crowned its festival queen for over 100 years running. When a small town keeps a party alive that long, you know it’s the real deal.

So what’s waiting for you? Pretty much everything you’d want from a classic Texas hometown festival, all in one juicy week. There’s a street parade rolling through downtown, a carnival lighting up the festival grounds, and the crowning of the festival royalty. You can cheer on the seed-spitting contest, line up for free watermelon slicing, and watch the competitions where local growers show off their finest peaches, melons, and homemade desserts — these blue ribbons mean serious bragging rights around here.

This year brings an extra dose of fun: on Thursday night, Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos take over the Festival Stage for a high-energy, take-your-requests show. Two players, two pianos, and a whole crowd hollering out songs — it’s the kind of rowdy, sing-along good time that’s fun for the whole family. Admission’s free (though tips are always welcome), and there’s a cash bar for the grown-ups. Bring your friends and your song requests and get ready for a great night.

And then there’s the tractor pull. This isn’t a side show — the De Leon tractor pull packs the arena, with the ground shaking as souped-up machines roar and strain down the track. Add in the town’s award-winning rodeo, live music on the stage, a kids’ tractor pull for the little ones, and a 5K “Watermelon Crawl” for anyone wanting to earn their slice, and you’ve got a full week the whole family will remember.

Here’s a fun bit of trivia to drop while you’re there: De Leon holds a one-of-a-kind place in music history. Back on July 4, 1955, a young Elvis Presley played the town and — in the only paid show of its kind — sang nothing but gospel. That’s the kind of deep, surprising story these old Texas towns hold, and you only find it by showing up.

A few friendly tips before you go. August in Texas means heat, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, and plan to grab some of that free watermelon to cool down. Wear comfortable shoes for walking the grounds and downtown, bring some cash for the carnival, food vendors, and that cash bar, and come hungry — small-town festival food is half the fun. Most of all, come ready to slow down, chat with strangers who’ll feel like old friends by sundown, and soak up the kind of genuine hometown pride that money can’t buy.

So round up the family, gas up the truck, and make the drive out to De Leon. A hundred-plus years of Texans can’t be wrong — this one’s worth it.

If You Go

The De Leon Peach & Melon Festival & Tractor Pull runs the first full week of August 2026 in De Leon, TX, with most activities at the festival grounds at 5401 Highway 6 and events spilling into downtown. Expect the parade, carnival, rodeo, tractor pulls, live music, contests, and free watermelon slicing across the week.

One night to circle: on Thursday, August 6, Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos take the Festival Stage from 8:30 to 11 p.m. for a high-energy show that’s fun for the whole family. Admission is free (tips welcome), and a cash bar will be on hand.

For the full daily schedule, tractor-pull and rodeo tickets, and vendor info, call (254) 893-6600, email [email protected], or visit pmdfestival.com.
