For Texas artists dreaming of dedicated studio time, a real budget to make new work, and a shot at international recognition, Artpace San Antonio’s annual Texas Open Call is back, and this year applying won’t cost a dime.
The Texas Open Call is the primary gateway into Artpace’s International Artist-in-Residence program, one of the most respected residency opportunities in the state. Artists living and working in Texas can apply through the AnyArtist.org website ahead of the August 24 deadline, with no application fee required this cycle, a notable shift from past years when applicants paid a small fee to enter.
Eligibility is straightforward: artists must have lived in Texas for at least one year at the time of application. Current students, Artpace staff, and members of the Artpace Board of Directors, along with their spouses, domestic partners, and immediate family, are not eligible to apply.
Here’s how it works. Guest curators will review every eligible application and select at least 20 Texas artists for in-person studio visits, taking place in 2027. From that pool, curators choose the Texas artists who’ll join the residency’s 2028 cohort. Each residency season pairs one Texas artist alongside one national artist and one international artist, giving selected Texans a genuine seat at the table alongside major names from around the world.
The residency itself is no small opportunity. Artists selected receive paid travel to and from San Antonio, a fully furnished apartment for the two-month residency, a $6,000 stipend to cover living expenses, and a $10,000 production budget to create new work. Residents also get dedicated studio space, access to wood and metal workshops and a digital media studio, plus technical and administrative support throughout their stay. At the end of the residency, new work from each artist is presented in an 18-week exhibition at Artpace.
Founded in 1995 by philanthropist and collector Linda Pace, Artpace has spent three decades functioning as an international laboratory for contemporary art, bringing artists from around the world to San Antonio while consistently reserving a spot for homegrown Texas talent. Recent Texas artists who came up through the Texas Open Call include Violette Bule, Ian Gerson, Laura Veles Drey, Celia Eberle, and José Villalobos, each going on to complete a full residency and exhibition at the organization’s San Antonio space.
Even artists who aren’t selected for a studio visit still gain something from applying. Every eligible submission is added to a resource list that Artpace shares with prominent visiting directors, curators, and writers from arts organizations around the world, giving Texas artists visibility well beyond the residency program itself.
