This stretch of Texas coastline was once home to Jean Lafitte, one of history’s most legendary buccaneers, and the island is leaning fully into that legacy with the second annual Galveston Pirate Festival, a full week of pirate-themed adventure the City of Galveston has officially declared “Galveston Pirate Festival Week” by city proclamation.
The festival runs September 14 through 20, spreading activities across multiple locations on the island before building to its main event Saturday, September 19, at Moody Gardens. The whole thing is billed as family-friendly, with costumes encouraged and free parking throughout the week.

The first stretch, September 14 through 17, brings free events scattered around Galveston Island, a low-pressure way to ease into the pirate spirit before the bigger festivities kick off.
Things ramp up Friday, September 18, with a Pirate Invasion followed by two separate Pirate Pub Crawls on Historic Galveston Island’s famous Strand district, giving adults a themed night out ahead of the weekend’s main event.
Saturday, September 19, is the big one. The Main Pirate Festival takes over Moody Gardens with a full day of family-friendly programming, including live bands, a vendor market, treasure hunts, a costume contest, pirate history tours, kids’ inflatable axe throwing, a dedicated kids zone, mermaid meet-and-greets, blacksmith demonstrations, and aerial and juggling performances. Barrel races round out an already packed lineup.
The week wraps up Sunday, September 20, with Pirate Expeditions and Tours, giving visitors the chance to board the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, one of the oldest sailing ships still afloat, alongside harbor boat tours around Galveston’s waterfront.
