Twenty-One Years of Bridging Cultures: Plano International Festival Returns to Haggard Park

What began as a grassroots idea from a city advisory board has grown into the largest, longest-running multicultural festival in North Texas.

Haggard Park, Plano, TX — Saturday, October 17, 2026, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Back in the early 2000s, then-Plano Mayor Pat Evans created the Multicultural Outreach Roundtable, an all-volunteer advisory board meant to give Plano’s diverse residents a stronger voice in city government. Among the group’s earliest ideas, proposed by founding member Dr. Christopher A. Parr, was a festival where the city’s many cultures could come together and share their heritage with the whole community. That idea became reality in October 2005, when a team of passionate grassroots volunteers brought the very first Plano International Festival to life in downtown Plano’s Haggard Park.

This year marks the festival’s 22nd edition, and it remains true to its original mission: to educate, enlighten, and enrich the multicultural experience of everyone who attends. The free festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Haggard Park, and it’s now recognized as the largest, longest-running multicultural festival in North Texas.

The festival brings music and dance performances from cultures around the world, international food, cultural displays, and art, alongside family-friendly programming built to keep kids engaged. Younger visitors can explore a Festival Passport, encouraging them to visit cultural booths representing communities from across the globe, while also enjoying free STEAM and eco-friendly activities and health screenings offered throughout the day.

The scale of volunteer effort behind the festival is genuinely remarkable. According to organizers, it takes roughly 4,800 hours of volunteer time each year to bring the event to life, run entirely by the Plano International Festival Corporation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating the city’s cultural diversity while promoting environmental stewardship. Beyond the celebration itself, the festival’s mission has always been about something bigger: raising awareness of Plano’s many ethnic communities, building bridges between them, and strengthening the broader community as a whole.

More than two decades since that first festival in 2005, Plano International Festival has become a defining part of the city’s identity, proof that a small idea from a city advisory board can grow into one of the region’s most meaningful cultural traditions.
