Trunk-or-Treat, Costume Contests, and a Lakeside Halloween: Spook-Tacular Returns to Ray Roberts Lake

Rangers turn the most-visited state park in Texas into an all-day Halloween celebration, complete with trunk-or-treating, campsite decorating contests, and trick-or-treating through the campground.

Johnson Branch Unit, Ray Roberts Lake State Park, Valley View, TX — Saturday, October 31, 2026

For families looking for a Halloween that trades sidewalks for lakeside trails, Ray Roberts Lake State Park has an answer. The park’s Johnson Branch Unit hosts its State Park Spook-Tacular on Halloween day itself, giving rangers and visitors a full afternoon and evening built entirely around trick-or-treats and October fun.

Now heading into roughly its fourth year, the tradition started small back around 2023 and has grown steadily since, with last year’s event billed as the third annual celebration. The event is held at Johnson Branch Unit, located at 100 PW 4153 in Valley View, and typically runs from early to mid-afternoon into the evening. Based on last year’s schedule, activities kick off with a Trunk-or-Treat at the Nature Center parking lot, giving kids a safe, easy first stop to fill up on candy. From there, the fun spreads through the park’s Juniper and Walnut camping loops, where campers decorate their sites for a friendly competition, with First, Second, and Third Place winners recognized for their efforts. Trick-or-treating continues throughout both loops for the rest of the event, giving families camping for the weekend, or just visiting for the day, a genuine neighborhood Halloween feel, just set against a backdrop of lake views and towering trees instead of suburban streets.

The setting makes this one worth the drive on its own. Ray Roberts Lake State Park spans 3,777 acres in Denton County near Pilot Point, and thanks to its easy access from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, it was actually the most visited state park in all of Texas in 2025, drawing more than 863,000 visitors that year alone. The park is named for Herbert Ray Roberts, a Democratic congressman who represented Texas’s 4th congressional district from 1962 to 1981, and it’s organized into nine total units, three of which, Johnson Branch, Isle du Bois, and Jordan, offer full recreation and overnight camping facilities.

The land itself carries a much older story, too. Humans have lived in the park’s Isle du Bois region for more than 11,000 years, with Native American tribes including the Kiowa and Comanche inhabiting the area around the 1500s, long before settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. Visitors can still find the ruins of a 19th-century homestead preserved within the Isle du Bois unit today.

For families weighing their options this Halloween, Spook-Tacular offers something a little different from the usual costume party or neighborhood trick-or-treat route: a full day outdoors, a genuine sense of community among fellow campers, and a Halloween evening spent somewhere with a lot more stars overhead than streetlights.

For more information, contact the Johnson Branch Unit directly at (940) 637-2294, or visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s event calendar for updated 2026 details.
