AUSTIN, TX — The Austin City Council, in partnership with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, officially proclaimed July as National Park and Recreation Month during a meeting on June 5, 2025. The proclamation highlights the critical role that parks and recreation services play in enhancing the health, wellness, and quality of life for Austin residents.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of National Park and Recreation Month, an initiative led by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). The NRPA is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening communities nationwide through the transformative power of parks and recreation.

“Parks and recreation are essential to the physical, mental and social well-being of our community,” said Jesús Aguirre, Director of Austin Parks and Recreation and Chair of the NRPA Board of Directors. “Austin’s green spaces foster active lifestyles, support childhood development, contribute to economic prosperity, and preserve the natural beauty that makes Austin a special place to live and play.”

Throughout July, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department will host a variety of special events, educational programs, and recreational activities to encourage residents to explore the city’s parks, trails, pools, sports facilities, and nature preserves. These offerings are designed to showcase the many ways in which parks contribute to environmental sustainability, community connection, and overall well-being.

Residents can expect opportunities to engage in family-friendly outdoor adventures, participate in fitness and wellness programs, and learn about local conservation efforts. The celebration underscores the city’s ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing green spaces for current and future generations.

More information about events and how to get involved is available at nrpa.org/events/july.
