TEXAS — As summer travel surges, cybersecurity experts are reminding Texans to stay vigilant in protecting their personal data. From public Wi-Fi to booking scams, seasonal travel brings increased exposure to cyber threats. With more people logging in from airports, hotels, and vacation rentals, now is the perfect time to brush up on cyber hygiene and smart digital practices.

“Cyber criminals target travelers because they’re often distracted and vulnerable,” warns the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). “A little preparation can go a long way in avoiding a ruined vacation.”

Cyber-Smart Travel: What You Need to Know

Watch out for travel scams:
A reported 34% of adults have encountered travel-related scams when booking online. Use reputable travel sites, avoid unsolicited emails offering deals, and always verify a site’s security before entering payment information.

Skip public Wi-Fi for banking and work:
Avoid using public internet connections for sensitive tasks. Opt for your mobile hotspot or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to keep your data secure.

Don’t get ‘juice jacked’:
Hackers can use public USB charging ports to transfer malware or steal your data. Bring your own charger or a fully charged power bank instead.

Think before you post:
Sharing your vacation in real-time can make you a target for identity theft or home burglary. Save the social media uploads for after you return—and make sure your accounts are set to private.

Practice basic cyber hygiene:
Update all apps and devices before your trip. Use strong passwords or biometric locks, enable location tracking on your phone, and back up important data in case of theft or device failure.
