TEXAS — As summer sets in, cybersecurity professionals are urging Texans to do more than just clean out closets—it’s time to clean up your digital life. That starts with your passwords.

According to recent cybersecurity reports, weak, repeated, or outdated passwords remain a top entry point for cybercriminals. From hijacked social media accounts to drained bank accounts, a compromised password can lead to severe real-world consequences.

Why Password Hygiene Matters

“Think of passwords like toothbrushes—don’t share them, don’t reuse them, and replace them if they’re compromised,” advises the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). “Keeping your digital credentials strong and unique is one of the most effective ways to stay safe online.”

Despite years of warnings, many users still rely on predictable passwords—using names of pets, birthdates, or simple phrases like “123456” or “password.” These shortcuts make it easy for cybercriminals to breach accounts with little effort.

Simple Steps to Secure Your Accounts

Refresh your roster:
Start by reviewing your most important online accounts—email, banking, social media—and ensure each has a unique, complex password. Experts recommend using a passphrase (like a string of unrelated words or a meaningful sentence) or storing secure credentials in a password manager.

Add an extra layer:
Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) wherever possible. Whether it’s a fingerprint, facial recognition, or one-time code, MFA can stop most hacking attempts even if your password is compromised.

Check for breaches:
Curious if your login credentials have already been exposed? Use a trusted resource like Have I Been Pwned to see if your email or password has been part of a data breach.

Final Takeaway:
Just like locking your front door at night, strong password habits are a basic part of personal safety in today’s digital world. So take 15 minutes this summer to do a digital deep clean—and stay a step ahead of cyber threats.
