McDADE, Texas — The tiny town of McDade is preparing to roll out the red carpet — or rather, the green rind — for one of Central Texas’s most beloved summer traditions. The 79th Annual McDade Watermelon Festival returns this Saturday, July 13, promising a full day of classic cars, live music, family fun, and, of course, plenty of sweet, juicy watermelon.

Located just 45 minutes east of Austin, the event will take place from 8 a.m. to midnight at the McDade Historical Society Grounds, 143 Bastrop Street. Admission is free.

What started nearly eight decades ago as a small-town celebration of McDade’s thriving watermelon farms has grown into a can’t-miss event for families across the region.

“It’s like stepping into a Hallmark movie,” said Janice Wheeler, a longtime volunteer. “But with more barbecue and better music.”

A Full Day of Classic Small-Town Entertainment

The festival kicks off early at 8 a.m. with a vintage car show, where antique and classic vehicles will line the streets, attracting car enthusiasts of all ages. From muscle cars to tractors, the display celebrates the craftsmanship and nostalgia of yesteryear.

At 10 a.m., the festival parade winds through town, featuring watermelon queens, decorated floats, tractors, and marching bands. Children and spectators alike can expect candy, cheers, and plenty of small-town pride.

Throughout the day, festivalgoers can browse artisan booths, sample treats from food trucks, and participate in family-friendly contests, including the ever-popular seed-spitting competition and a melon weigh-off, where the juiciest giants take center stage.

For many, the highlight comes later in the evening. The town square transforms into an open-air dance floor for the 8 p.m. street dance, featuring live local bands and two-stepping under the stars.

“We don’t shut down until the last song plays,” said Rodney Lopez, festival chair. “That could be midnight. Could be later.”

A Community Tradition with Deep Roots

Beyond the fun, the Watermelon Festival serves as a symbol of community pride and resilience. While McDade’s watermelon farming days have dwindled, the festival remains a vibrant reminder of its agricultural roots.

Each year, dozens of volunteers help organize the event, from decorating floats to slicing watermelon for tasting booths.

“The heart of this festival is the people,” said Lopez. “It’s about neighbors, friends, and families coming together — and reminding ourselves that simple joys still matter.”

What to Know Before You Go

Organizers recommend bringing lawn chairs, sunscreen, and plenty of water. While there are shaded areas on-site, July heat can be intense. Attendees are also encouraged to bring cash for local vendors and parking.

Festivalgoers hoping to bring home a watermelon can purchase locally grown varieties on-site, with proceeds supporting community programs.
