DALLAS, Texas — This Fourth of July promises to be spectacular, with families across Texas preparing for backyard barbecues, dazzling fireworks displays, and community celebrations. While the excitement builds, safety experts are sharing friendly reminders to help everyone enjoy a worry-free holiday.

“We want every family to have an amazing Independence Day,” said Dr. Denise Eblen, Administrator of the Food Safety and Inspection Service. “A few simple precautions can make all the difference between a good celebration and a great one.”

Grilling Like a Pro: Food Safety Made Simple

Nothing says Fourth of July like the sizzle of burgers on the grill and the aroma of barbecue in the air. The USDA offers these straightforward tips to keep your cookout both delicious and safe:

Smart Prep Work Planning ahead is half the battle. Thaw frozen meats in the refrigerator, cold water, or microwave — never on the counter where bacteria can multiply. When marinating, keep everything chilled in the fridge, and remember that marinades that touched raw meat need to be boiled before reusing.

Temperature is Everything Here’s where a simple food thermometer becomes your best friend. Color can be deceiving, but temperature doesn’t lie. Aim for 145°F for beef, pork, and seafood; 160°F for ground meats; and 165°F for all poultry.

Beat the Heat Texas summers are no joke, and neither is the “danger zone” between 40°F and 140°F where bacteria thrive. Keep cold dishes on ice, hot dishes above 140°F, and when in doubt, follow the two-hour rule — one hour if temperatures soar above 90°F.

“Think of food safety as just another ingredient in your recipe for success,” Eblen noted. “It’s that simple.”

Fireworks: Leave It to the Experts

While professional fireworks displays light up the night sky across Texas, local fire departments are reminding residents that the safest sparkle comes from watching the pros at work.

Lieutenant Carlos Ramirez of Dallas Fire-Rescue puts it simply: “The most beautiful fireworks are the ones you can enjoy without worry. Public displays offer all the excitement with none of the risk.”

For those in areas where personal fireworks are legal, safety experts recommend keeping water or fire extinguishers nearby, never attempting to relight duds, and soaking used fireworks in water before disposal.

Many Texas cities, including Dallas and Austin, prohibit personal fireworks use. Local fire departments encourage residents to check city ordinances and discover the many professional displays happening in their communities.

Stay Smart in Crowds

Large Independence Day gatherings bring out the best in community spirit, and law enforcement agencies are working to keep that positive energy flowing safely.

“We love seeing families come together to celebrate,” said Officer Michelle Grant of Fort Worth Police. “A little awareness goes a long way toward ensuring everyone has a fantastic time.”

The advice is refreshingly straightforward: stay alert, trust your instincts, and don’t hesitate to report anything that seems unusual. Most importantly, look out for one another — the same neighborly spirit that makes these celebrations special.

Avoiding Holiday Hassles

While most people are honest and helpful, a few bad actors try to take advantage of holiday excitement. Smart shoppers can easily avoid common pitfalls:

  • Buy event tickets only from official sources
  • Purchase fireworks from licensed, reputable dealers
  • Verify charities through trusted sources like Charity Navigator before donating

“A little skepticism can save a lot of heartache,” Grant observed. “When deals seem too good to be true, they usually are.”

Making Memories Safely

The best Independence Day celebrations balance fun with common sense. Stay hydrated in the Texas heat, designate sober drivers, and remember that pets often find fireworks stressful — keeping them inside with updated ID tags shows you care.

Label your coolers, pack plenty of sunscreen, and consider this your permission to take safety seriously without taking the fun out of the holiday.

Your Independence Day Success Formula

The recipe for a perfect Fourth of July isn’t complicated:

  • Food Safety: Use thermometers and trust temperatures, not just appearance
  • Fireworks: Enjoy professional displays and follow local laws
  • Awareness: Stay alert in crowds and trust your instincts
  • Smart Shopping: Buy from trusted sources and verify before you spend
  • Pet Care: Keep furry family members safe and comfortable

“Independence Day celebrates our freedom, and part of that freedom is the ability to celebrate safely with the people we love,” reflected Dr. Eblen. “These simple steps help ensure that freedom includes freedom from worry.”

This Fourth of July, Texas communities are ready to welcome families for unforgettable celebrations. With a little planning and these expert-backed tips, your holiday can be everything you hoped for — and more.

Whether you’re flipping burgers, watching fireworks, or simply enjoying time with loved ones, safety doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to be intentional.

For emergencies, dial 911. For non-emergency questions, contact local police and fire departments. Additional safety resources are available at www.fsis.usda.gov and through the DHS Tip Line at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE.
