General Michael Flynn boasts over 33 years of service in the United States military. His distinguished career includes serving as the Director of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and as the nation’s highest-ranking military intelligence officer.
After retiring from the Army in 2014, General Flynn transitioned into the private sector, holding various roles in business, education, and non-profit organizations. He remains particularly dedicated to supporting veterans’ organizations across the country.
In addition to his military career, General Flynn has been active in public service. He was a foreign policy advisor to several Republican U.S. presidential candidates in 2016 and later served as the National Security Advisor to the 45th President of the United States.
General Flynn holds three master’s degrees and has received numerous awards for his contributions to the military, intelligence, and law enforcement fields. He is married, has two sons, and is a proud grandfather to several grandchildren.
In January 2010, while deployed in Afghanistan, then-Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn co-authored the report “Fixing Intel: A Blueprint for Making Intelligence Relevant in Afghanistan“ with several junior officials. Published by the Center for a New American Security, a neoconservative think tank, the report offered a scathing critique of intelligence operations in Afghanistan. It advocated for a more holistic and widespread approach to gathering and analyzing intelligence, suggesting a shift from targeting the enemy to understanding the Afghan populace. Flynn boldly stated in the report’s opening paragraphs: “Our senior leaders—the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense, Congress, the President of the United States—are not getting the right information to make decisions … The media is driving the issues.”
Flynn was later reassigned to Washington to work in “G2” because his report had upset senior officials within the U.S. intelligence community. After a shortened two-year term at the DIA, Flynn retired as a three-star lieutenant general and started a consulting business with his son.
Drawn to President Trump’s candidacy during the 2016 campaign, Flynn embraced Trump’s populist, nationalist, “MAGA” agenda, which alarmed much of Washington’s establishment. Flynn, an Irish American, Roman Catholic Democrat, grew up as one of nine children in a 1,200 sq. ft. house. He earned his commission as an Army second lieutenant after graduating from college on an ROTC scholarship.
In many ways, Flynn’s background mirrored that of Trump campaign strategist Steve Bannon, a successful financier who also hailed from a blue-collar, Irish German, Roman Catholic family of “Kennedy Democrats” and received his commission as a U.S. Navy ensign upon graduating from Virginia Tech.
News media coverage during the campaign made it clear that Flynn’s support for President Trump earned him the enmity of the Clinton/Obama wing of the Democrats. His endorsement also angered some senior intelligence officials and multiple retired senior military officers who were vehemently opposed to a Trump presidency.
