NAVASOTA, TX – Navasota Police Sergeant Mark Butler, an Army veteran and respected member of the community, sacrificed his life on Wednesday, Jan. 15, during a highway incident involving a fleeing suspect.

The sequence of events began when College Station Police responded to a forgery in progress at Prosperity Bank. A female suspect fled in a black Jeep Wrangler after attempting to cash a fraudulent check, initiating a pursuit that ended in a fatal collision on Highway 6 near Navasota.

Collision and Aftermath

At approximately 3:30 p.m., Butler intercepted the suspect, who was driving the wrong way on the highway. He maneuvered his patrol vehicle into the path of the oncoming Jeep, preventing a potential multi-vehicle collision.

Butler was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A bystander, Jonathan Crider, who was near the collision, credited Butler’s actions with saving lives. “He didn’t hesitate—he acted to protect everyone around him,” Crider told KBTX.

Investigation and Reactions

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is leading the investigation into the crash, while College Station Police continue to handle the forgery case. Tributes have poured in from across the state in honor of Butler’s actions.

“Our thoughts are with Sergeant Butler’s family and the entire Navasota community during this difficult time,” read a statement from the College Station Police Department.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick acknowledged Butler’s sacrifice, stating, “His death serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day.”

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst expressed her condolences, adding, “Sgt. Butler’s dedication and selflessness will not be forgotten. He lived to serve others and made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.”

Remembering a Hero

Sergeant Butler, who served in the Army before joining the Navasota Police Department, had been with the force for nearly four years. Colleagues and community members remember him for his unwavering commitment to protecting others.

As the Navasota community mourns, Butler’s actions highlight the courage and sacrifice often demanded of law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
