Texas food lovers, the wait is finally over.
The renowned Michelin Guide held a ceremony at Houston’s 713 Music Hall on Monday to reveal its first-ever Texas selection. The event awarded a total of 117 Texas restaurants representing 26 different cuisines.
Fifteen restaurants across Texas received a prestigious Michelin star — but none earned more than one. Michelin’s rating system ranges up to three stars, awarding restaurants that meet its high standards of culinary artistry.
The rest of the restaurants were either awarded the Bib Gourmand, which honors restaurants that deliver quality dishes at affordable prices, or the Green Star which recognizes restaurants with sustainable practices. “Recommended” restaurants in the Guide provide “high-quality dining” experiences.
Austin topped the list with seven restaurants, followed by Houston with six. Dallas received just one star, a surprising result to many, while San Antonio also saw one restaurant earn a star.
“Our anonymous inspectors were captivated by Texas’s culinary landscape,” Michelin Guides’ international director, Gwendal Poullennec, said in a statement. “This selection showcases the distinct flavors of Texas, including Barbecue and Tex-Mex, while also embracing international influences. We’re thrilled to welcome these restaurants into the Michelin Guide family and celebrate the spirit of Texas’s restaurant community.”
Michelin has recently added Texas to its growing list of U.S. destinations thanks to state tourism agencies, which funded inspectors to evaluate local dining establishments. Similar approaches have been helpful to bring Michelin Guides to Atlanta, Florida, and Colorado. For years, Texas chefs and restaurateurs have been calling for a Michelin presence in their state. Celebrated for its famous BBQ, Tex-Mex, and tacos, Texas is now earning a place on the global culinary map.
