  • Coupland Dancehall saved from closure
After 119 years in operation, the historic Coupland Dancehall was spared from permanent shutdown thanks to a partnership with Lightstream Presents. The venue will close briefly for renovations and plans to reopen with a grand event in November.
  • Highway 290 set for major upgrades
Officials unveiled plans to revamp U.S. Highway 290 between Manor and Elgin, including new tolled lanes, expanded general-purpose lanes, and bike and pedestrian infrastructure. The corridor is one of Central Texas’s busiest, with delays adding as much as 17 minutes to commutes

  • Court halts East Texas execution — The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a stay of execution for Robert Roberson, convicted in a 2003 shaken-baby case. The court ordered a new review amid claims that advances in medical science undermine the original forensic evidence used to convict him, marking another high-profile test of Texas’ post-conviction review process.

  • Dallas to close library, pools for police funding — The City of Dallas will shut down one public library and three community pools to comply with a new voter-approved charter amendment directing more money toward police staffing. City officials said the closures are temporary, but residents and advocates warn the cuts could deepen inequality in underserved neighborhoods.

  • Retail boom expands in New Braunfels — A $2.9 million project, Pecan Crossing Retail, has been approved along FM 725 in New Braunfels, bringing new shops and restaurants to the city’s fast-growing south side. Developers say the complex will include space for local businesses and national chains, with construction expected to begin early next year.

  • San Antonio defies Abbott’s crosswalk order—for now — San Antonio city leaders are delaying removal of rainbow crosswalks downtown while seeking an exemption from Governor Abbott’s directive banning political street markings. Officials say the crosswalks promote inclusivity and tourism, while state officials argue they violate federal traffic standards and risk loss of transportation funds.
