Katy ISD launches its first-ever all-girls flag football teams this season, backed by the Houston Texans, as the sport races toward the 2028 Olympics and a shot at becoming an official UIL sport in Texas.

In Texas, football is not just a sport. It’s a culture, a community, and a rite of passage that has defined Friday nights for generations. And now, for the first time in Katy ISD history, that rite of passage belongs to the girls too.

Katy ISD has launched its first-ever all-girls flag football teams at the high school level — an inaugural season that marks a genuine milestone for one of the largest and most competitive school districts in the state. These athletes are not playing a casual recreational game. They are competitors, running plays, studying film, and bringing the skills they’ve built in basketball, soccer, and track onto a football field that is finally theirs.

The Movement Behind the Moment

Girls flag football is the fastest-growing high school sport in the United States, and Texas is at the center of that growth. The Houston Texans launched their Girls Flag Football Program in 2023 with a simple mission: create equitable opportunities for young female athletes in a state where football has always been king. What began with 12 Houston ISD high school teams has expanded to more than 80 schools across Houston and Texas — including all 25 Houston ISD high schools, Fort Bend ISD, Alief ISD, Stafford ISD, and Texas Charter Schools, with additional programs in Austin and El Paso.

The Texans have invested more than $1.4 million to fund uniforms, equipment, and program development across the state. Every dollar has gone toward making sure a girl who wants to play football has a team to play on.

“Our ultimate goal is to create access to girls flag for all girls who want to play and help make Texas the next state to sanction the sport,” said Hannah McNair, Chief Community Officer and Vice President of the Houston Texans Foundation. “The bonds girls create and the lessons learned through flag are invaluable, and we look forward to continuing to grow the game for the next generation of female athletes.”

Katy ISD’s inaugural program is part of this statewide surge — and it couldn’t be better timed.

The Players Themselves

The girls suiting up for Katy ISD’s first-ever teams are athletes in every sense of the word. Many are multi-sport competitors bringing real defensive and offensive skills from their other sports onto the field. They are learning playbooks, developing strategy, and competing with the kind of energy and joy that defines a program in its first season — touchdown dances, blinged-out cleats, and the unmistakable feeling of being part of something that has never existed before.

“They’re learning plays, it’s not just going out there and tossing a ball. These are competitors,” said one program organizer. “The joy on their faces — it’s been the most incredible thing to see.”

Where This Is All Heading

The timing of Katy ISD’s launch could not be more significant. Flag football is set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games, making it one of the few high school sports that can offer a direct pathway from a Friday night game to an international stage. In January 2026, the NCAA added women’s flag football to the Emerging Sports for Women program across Divisions I, II, and III — putting the sport on a direct pathway to NCAA championship status, college scholarships, and elite-level competition. NAIA, NJCAA, and HBCU programs are already fielding teams.

The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans are jointly pushing for UIL sanctioning — which would make girls flag football an official Texas high school sport — and have already helped establish more than 200 varsity-level club teams across the state to build the case. Their joint effort culminates on June 13 and 14, 2026, at DATCU Stadium at the University of North Texas in Denton with the first-ever Girls Flag Football Texas State Championship — free and open to the public.

“High school football is the heartbeat of Texas, and seeing more and more girls take the field through the flag is a reminder that the game is bigger than any one team,” said a Dallas Cowboys spokesperson. “Teaming up with the Texans for our state championship is about more than just crowning a winner — it’s about opening doors, celebrating talent, and growing football for a whole new generation of young women.”

A Program Built to Last

More than 500,000 girls ages 6 to 17 now play flag football across the United States, with 17 state athletic associations already sanctioning the sport for varsity play. Texas is not yet among them — but with Katy ISD, Houston ISD, and dozens of other districts fielding competitive teams, and with the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans pushing hard for UIL recognition, that is expected to change.

For the girls in Katy ISD who took the field for the very first time this season, the history they are making may not fully register yet. But they are building something — for themselves, for the girls who come after them, and for a state that is finally opening its most beloved game to everyone who wants to play it.
