Dallas Just Made Aviation History — and It Happened at Love Field

The world’s first all-electric aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle is now in service at Dallas Love Field. Here’s what it means for the city, the airport, and the future of emergency response.

On April 26, Dallas did something no city in the world had done before. Dallas Fire-Rescue and the Department of Aviation unveiled the PANTHER 6×6 electric aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle at Love Field’s ARFF Station 21 — the first fully electric aircraft firefighting vehicle ever deployed anywhere on the planet.

Dallas didn’t just upgrade a piece of equipment. It set a global standard.

What Makes This Vehicle Different

The PANTHER 6×6, manufactured by Rosenbauer International, replaces diesel-powered aircraft rescue vehicles that have been the industry standard for decades. The difference in performance is immediate and measurable.

The electric vehicle accelerates from 0 to 50 miles per hour in under 25 seconds — and under 20 seconds in Boost Mode, compared to 28 seconds for a comparable diesel vehicle. In an aircraft emergency, those seconds are not abstract. They are the difference between a fire that is contained and one that isn’t.

The master stream reach — the distance from which crews can deploy water or firefighting foam — increased by 40 percent, extending from 190 feet to 250 feet. That additional distance means Dallas Fire-Rescue crews can now engage aircraft fires from a safer and more effective position than was previously possible.

The electric motors also produce approximately 50 percent less noise during emergency responses compared to diesel operations — a meaningful improvement for airport operations, for surrounding neighborhoods, and for the crews who operate the vehicle daily.

The vehicle weighs 91,000 pounds fully loaded and is purpose-built for the unique demands of aircraft rescue — a discipline that requires not just speed and power but the ability to deliver massive volumes of water and suppressant foam rapidly and accurately in environments where conventional fire trucks cannot operate.

Why This Matters at Love Field

Dallas Love Field is the busiest medium hub airport in the United States, serving nearly 18 million passengers annually. The airport averages 675 aircraft operations every single day, ranks second in the nation for private aircraft traffic, and generates hundreds of Fire-EMS related responses each year.

That volume of activity places extraordinary demands on the airport’s emergency response infrastructure. A world-class airport requires world-class safety equipment — and with the PANTHER 6×6, Dallas Love Field now has both.

“Improved safety and operational resilience are always top of mind at DAL,” said Patrick Carreno, Director of Aviation at Dallas Love Field. “With the addition of the electric PANTHER 6×6, we are equipping them with a unique resource that enhances life-saving capabilities while supporting our commitment to energy efficiency and carbon neutrality.”

The Bigger Picture for Dallas

This deployment reflects a broader commitment from the City of Dallas to modernize its emergency response fleet while advancing environmental goals. Dallas Love Field has committed to carbon neutrality, and the PANTHER 6×6 — with no diesel emissions during operation — is a direct expression of that commitment without any compromise to performance or safety.

If anything, performance improved.

“Innovation and new technology are a critical part of Dallas Fire-Rescue’s overall mission of rapid response, excellence in care, and the highest standards of safety,” said Chief Justin Ball of Dallas Fire-Rescue. “Adding the electric PANTHER 6×6 to our fleet equips our team with the latest in sustainable technology that will help us enhance our operational capabilities at Dallas Love Field.”

The PANTHER 6×6 is now operational at ARFF Station 21 at Dallas Love Field — quietly standing by, ready to respond faster and reach farther than anything that came before it.
