A Cuban national was arrested in Miami and charged with sexual battery and kidnapping; the charges are allegations, and ICE says it has placed a detainer on him
The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged a detainer on a Cuban national arrested in Miami and charged in connection with a sexual assault.
According to DHS, police in Miami arrested the man, identified as Yusel Keoma Perez-Leyva, on June 18 after a woman reported she had been drugged and sexually assaulted. The agency said he now faces charges of sexual battery on a physically incapacitated victim and kidnapping. The charges are allegations that have not been proven in court, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until convicted.
DHS said ICE lodged a detainer for him the same day he was arrested. According to the agency, the man entered the United States in Arizona in 2021 and was released into the country at that time.
In a statement, Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said the man is charged in the case and that, because Florida cooperates with ICE, he is expected to be turned over to ICE custody. Bis attributed his presence in the country to the prior administration’s border policies.
