Goliad, Texas — Goliad State Park and Historic Site offers a vivid glimpse into Texas’ diverse history, showcasing the lives of Native Americans, Spanish explorers, Texian settlers, and more. Located in southeast Texas, this site invites visitors to explore the past while enjoying the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the San Antonio River region.

Discover Texas’ History

The park’s centerpiece is Mission Espíritu Santo, a stunning example of Spanish colonial-era architecture restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. Tour the mission’s colorful chapel, learn about its ranching history, and even ring the church bell.

For more historical exploration, visit nearby Mission Rosario or the El Camino Real de los Tejas Visitors Center, which highlights the historic Spanish “King’s Road.” Follow the Angel of Goliad Trail to Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Site to learn about Ignacio Seguin Zaragoza, hero of the Battle of Puebla.

Recreational Opportunities

On the Water: The San Antonio River offers excellent fishing opportunities for sunfish, bass, and catfish. Fishing gear is available to borrow, and no fishing license is required when fishing from shore in a state park. Kayak or canoe along the 6.6-mile Goliad Paddling Trail, taking out at the park’s dock.

On Land: The park’s trails provide plenty of opportunities to explore. Walk the 2.5-mile Angel of Goliad Hike and Bike Trail, or explore shorter trails near the river and mission. Nature enthusiasts can visit the Cardinal’s Haven bird blind or explore loops of the Great Texas Birding Trail.

Camping and Amenities

The park offers a range of camping options, from water-only sites to full hookups and screened shelters. Picnic areas, a park store, and a group hall and amphitheater are available for visitors. The chapel can also be reserved for weddings.

Volunteer and Ranger Programs

Volunteers play a vital role in maintaining the park and supporting special events. Weekend ranger programs and Junior Ranger activities for kids provide fun and educational ways to connect with the park.
