TYLER, TEXAS — The City of Tyler is now accepting applications for its Boards and Commissions, providing residents a chance to participate directly in shaping the city’s policies, programs, and future development. The application window is open until Monday, August 4, with official appointments scheduled to be made by the City Council on Wednesday, September 10.

The appointments are for two-year volunteer terms, and members serve without compensation. These citizen-led bodies provide guidance on a range of municipal matters — from zoning decisions to public beautification efforts.

“Boards and Commissions fulfill an important role in City government by evaluating issues that affect our community and making recommendations to the Council for needed action,” said City Clerk Cassandra Brager. “It is important that we fill vacancies on the boards.”

Application Process

Interested individuals can apply online at CityofTyler.org or obtain an application in person at the City Clerk’s Office in City Hall at 212 N. Bonner Ave. Applications may also be requested by phone at (903) 531-1106 to be faxed or mailed.

While most positions require applicants to be residents of Tyler, some boards may allow exceptions as specified by city ordinance. Additional qualifications may be required for certain appointments.

Openings Available on a Variety of Boards

Regular Boards (Meet Monthly or Bi-Monthly):

  • Airport Advisory Board

  • Half-Cent Sales Tax Board

  • Keep Tyler Beautiful Board

  • Parks Board

  • Planning and Zoning Commission

  • Traffic Safety Board

  • Tyler Historic Preservation Board

  • Tyler Public Library Board

Periodic Boards (Meet As Needed):

  • Animal Care Advisory Board

  • Board of Adjustment (Zoning)

  • Civil Service Commission

  • Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals

  • Disabilities Issue Review Board

  • Main Street Board

  • Neighborhood Revitalization Board

A Chance to Make a Difference

City officials emphasize that serving on a board or commission is one of the most effective ways for residents to become directly involved in local governance and civic improvement.

“Whether your interest lies in historic preservation, public parks, transportation, or neighborhood development, there’s a board where your voice can make a difference,” said Brager.

For more information on board responsibilities, meeting schedules, or application guidelines, visit cityoftyler.org or contact the City Clerk’s Office directly.
