AUSTIN, TX — The Texas Historical Commission invites Austinites to reconnect with the past through needle and thread at the Handmade History: Embroidery Workshop, taking place Saturday, June 28, at the French Legation State Historic Site.
This beginner-friendly workshop, part of the Handmade History lecture and craft series, will run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 802 San Marcos St. The session will be led by local artisan Kaylah Banuelos of Okay.Lahv, who will guide participants through three fundamental embroidery techniques: the Back Stitch, Chain Stitch, and the ever-charming French Knot.

Attendees will leave not only with new skills but with a handcrafted tote bag showcasing their personalized embroidery design—proof that historical handiwork still thrives in the modern day.
“Learning these timeless techniques not only connects us to generations before us,” Banuelos said, “but it also gives us the opportunity to create something one-of-a-kind—something that reflects our personal style.”
Whether you’re looking to start a new hobby, create heartfelt handmade gifts, or even explore potential small business ideas rooted in traditional crafts, this workshop offers a stitch of inspiration.
Registration is $25 per person, and space is limited. To reserve your spot, call (737) 226-1454 or email [email protected].
And if embroidery isn’t your thread of choice, you can explore other hands-on history opportunities across the state by visiting the Texas Historical Commission’s events calendar at thc.texas.gov/events. There’s a historical experience waiting for everyone—right in your own neck of the woods.
