ARLINGTON, Texas — With the FIFA World Cup coming to North Texas in less than a year, nearly 200 volunteers grabbed trash bags and gloves to clean up Lake Arlington on Friday, June 13.
The community cleanup lasted from 9 to 11 a.m. at two spots around the lake, bringing together neighbors who wanted to make their area look great before the world’s biggest soccer tournament arrives.
Why Clean Up for the World Cup?
The 2026 World Cup will bring millions of visitors to North Texas from around the globe. Arlington and surrounding cities want to show off their best side when the world is watching.
“We want this to be something that has a lasting legacy, not something that just stays two months of the games,” said Meghna Tare, who works on sustainability for the North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee.
The cleanup focused on:
- Picking up litter around the lake
- Protecting local wildlife and plants
- Keeping the water clean
- Making the area beautiful for residents and visitors
Who Organized This?
The cleanup was a team effort between several local groups:
- City of Arlington
- City of Fort Worth
- Trinity River Authority
- University of Texas at Arlington (UTA)
- Trinity Coalition
- North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee
What’s Coming to North Texas
The World Cup will run from June 14 to July 14, 2026. North Texas will host nine soccer matches, including one of the semi-final games where teams compete to reach the championship.
That means some of the world’s best soccer players and millions of fans will be visiting the area.
More Events Coming
This lake cleanup is just the beginning. Organizers plan more community events and volunteer opportunities leading up to the World Cup.
“We are here to support the sustainability of the North Texas community,” Tare explained. The goal is to make lasting improvements that help the area long after the tournament ends.

Are Other Texas Cities Doing This Too?
Houston is also excited to be a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™, and they are actively recruiting volunteers. Houston has outlined their environmental sustainability efforts as part of their World Cup preparations, but no specific cleanup events like Arlington’s have been announced yet.
The Lake Arlington Cleanup was described as “part of a regional effort to support the sustainability goals tied to the global tournament”, suggesting this is part of a broader North Texas initiative.
The Arlington cleanup appears to be the first major environmental event of its kind for World Cup preparation in Texas, potentially setting an example for Houston and other host areas.

The Lake Arlington cleanup shows that residents are ready to roll up their sleeves and make it happen – and it may inspire similar efforts across Texas.
