The award-winning documentary about Shen Yun’s 20-year battle for truth, faith, and cultural survival screens in Dallas this Sunday with a live panel, VIP reception, and book signing. Tickets are extremely limited.
What happens when a foreign power reaches into a free society — and the only defense is a stage?
That is the question at the heart of UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun, the award-winning documentary that premiered in New York City on March 24 and is now coming to Dallas for a special screening this Sunday, June 7 at 5 p.m. at the Angelika Film Center in Mockingbird Lane. This is not a regular theatrical release. It is a Ministry of Truth Film Festival season opener — with a live panel discussion, a VIP reception, and an extremely limited book signing immediately following the film.
What UNBROKEN Is About
UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun is a human story about perseverance, resilience, and triumph. The performers wanted to revive a culture almost destroyed and expose the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party, but do so in the safety of Western democracies.
The film follows the stories of Shen Yun performers and their families as they contend with a global, illicit intimidation and interference campaign linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Shen Yun is known as the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company. Established in New York’s Hudson Valley in 2006, the company seeks to revive traditional Chinese culture, presenting the essence of “China before communism” on stage, and telling the story of the persecuted Falun Gong spiritual group — a mission that has made it a target of the CCP. Over its 20-year rise to global acclaim, Shen Yun has endured escalating attempts to stop its performances, from extensive disinformation drives to hoax bomb threats on American soil and beyond.
Through the eyes of Shen Yun performers and their families, the film reveals the challenges they face behind the scenes — persevering through the rigors of perfecting their craft, but also through a large-scale, escalating sabotage campaign.
Director Fiona Young obtained exclusive access to an American family of Shen Yun artists during training and on tour across the globe. That family — the Browdes — will be in Dallas on June 7.
The Panelists You’ll Meet in the Room
This screening is more than a film. Immediately following UNBROKEN, four panelists take the stage for a discussion that puts the documentary’s themes into a broader context.
Jan Jekielek is the host of American Thought Leaders on The Epoch Times and the author of Killed to Order: China’s Organ Harvesting Industry and the True Nature of America’s Biggest Adversary — the book that will be signed at the VIP reception following the screening. Jekielek is one of the foremost journalists covering the CCP’s human rights abuses and its reach into Western democracies.
Levi Browde is the Executive Director of the Falun Dafa Information Center and a Trustee of Fei Tian College — the arts institution where most Shen Yun performers receive their training. As the father of two Shen Yun principal dancers, his perspective bridges the personal and the institutional in a way few can match.
Jesse Browde and Lucas Browde are both Principal Dancers with Shen Yun Performing Arts — the young artists at the center of the documentary, whose journey from training to the world’s most demanding classical Chinese dance stages is what UNBROKEN follows.
The VIP Reception and Book Signing
Immediately following the screening and panel discussion, a VIP reception features a book signing with Jan Jekielek for Killed to Order. VIP tickets are sold separately from the screening admission and include a copy of the book. These tickets are extremely limited — purchase well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Why This Screening Matters
The story of Shen Yun is simultaneously a story about art, faith, cultural survival, and the reach of authoritarian power into free societies. The documentary follows Shen Yun’s rise as the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, sharing the beauty of authentic Chinese culture with audiences across the globe — and the price its performers and their families have paid to keep that mission alive against sustained, coordinated interference.
At a moment when questions about foreign influence, cultural freedom, and the nature of truth dominate the national conversation, UNBROKEN brings those questions to life through the most personal possible lens: a family, a stage, and a choice to keep performing no matter what.
