An arctic air mass is poised to bring significantly colder weather to Texas next week, with the Houston area among the regions likely to experience freezing temperatures. If forecasts hold, this could mark the first freeze of the New Year.
The week will start with relatively mild weather. On Tuesday, the final day of 2024, daytime highs are expected to reach the mid-to-upper 60s, with nighttime temperatures dipping to around 50 degrees—ideal for outdoor New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Eric Berger, meteorologist at Space City Weather, notes that similar conditions will persist midweek, with clouds and a chance of light rain arriving Thursday. Friday night will bring cooler lows in the 40s, leading into a weekend of sunshine and slightly warmer highs in the low-to-mid 70s.
However, a notable shift in weather is expected late Sunday or early Monday as a cold front sweeps into the region. This will set the stage for colder nights and the possibility of freezing temperatures toward the end of the week.
Berger predicts a secondary surge of arctic air could drive temperatures below freezing by next Friday or Saturday, with many areas potentially experiencing the season’s first hard freeze.
“But will it be a light freeze, or will temperatures drop into the 20s? We just cannot say,” Berger wrote, emphasizing the uncertainty of long-range forecasts. He also mentioned a low-end chance of wintry precipitation, including light snow, late next week, though confidence in that outcome remains minimal.
Texans are advised to stay informed as forecasts evolve and to prepare for freezing conditions. Even with lingering uncertainties, the approaching arctic blast serves as a reminder to protect people, pets, and property from the potential impacts of freezing weather.
