AUSTIN, TEXAS — Travelers arriving from abroad now have a smoother landing at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), as airport officials announced the completion of the International Arrivals Improvements Project—the first major milestone under the airport’s Journey With AUS expansion program.

The $13.8 million upgrade adds more than 20,000 square feet of space to the Barbara Jordan Terminal and delivers a suite of enhancements aimed at improving passenger flow, comfort, and customs processing. Airport officials say the changes will cut down on wait times, reduce congestion during peak arrival periods, and create a more welcoming experience for international visitors.

“This project is a defining example of how we’re shaping the future of air travel in Austin,” said Ghizlane Badawi, CEO of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. “The enhancements to our international arrivals experience significantly improve efficiency and comfort for passengers today while laying the foundation for a more globally connected and passenger-focused airport of tomorrow.”

What’s New for International Travelers

The newly expanded international arrivals area now includes:

  • Baggage Carousels 6 and 7: Dual-use carousels that can serve both domestic and international flights, providing flexibility for baggage operations.

  • Oversized Baggage Carousel 8: A dedicated belt specifically designed for large luggage, eliminating the need for manual handling.

  • Expanded Queuing Areas: A larger space for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) screening that improves passenger movement and reduces bottlenecks during peak flight times.

  • Streamlined Passenger Flow: Improved layout and signage for smoother transitions from plane to ground transportation.

These changes are expected to significantly enhance the airport’s ability to process multiple international flights simultaneously, a crucial development as the Central Texas region continues to experience rapid population and travel growth.

Looking Ahead: What to Expect in the Future

The International Arrivals Improvements Project is just the beginning. The Journey With AUS initiative is a multi-year, strategic infrastructure plan that will transform AUS into a more modern, efficient, and traveler-friendly airport.

Key future developments include:

  • A new Arrivals and Departures Hall, currently in the design phase, which will expand capacity and provide additional passenger amenities.

  • Further renovations to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, slated over the next five years, to accommodate growing international traffic and improve the overall passenger experience.

  • Upgrades to baggage claim and security screening facilities, ensuring AUS remains a world-class gateway to Central Texas.

Funding for the improvements comes from traditional airport development sources, including airport revenues, bond proceeds, and cash reserves.

Project Team and Partners

  • Prime Contractor: Whiting-Turner

  • Designer: Gensler

“This is only the beginning,” said Badawi. “As we continue to grow, we’re committed to ensuring that AUS remains a convenient, welcoming, and efficient travel hub for all passengers—whether they’re coming home to Austin or visiting for the first time.”
