Bedford residents can dust off their competitive spirit for the city’s second annual Rubber Duck Race, where decorated ducks will battle for aquatic supremacy at the YMCA’s outdoor water park.

The beloved community tradition continues a nationwide phenomenon that began in the late 1980s in Aspen, Colorado, and has since raised millions for charitable causes while bringing neighbors together through lighthearted competition.

Event Details

  • Date: Saturday, July 12
  • Time: 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. (Race starts at 9:45 a.m.)
  • Location: Bedford Center YMCA Outdoor Water Park, 2801 Forest Ridge Dr.
  • Cost: Free admission, free duck provided
  • What to Bring: Just yourself – ducks supplied by event organizers
  • Age: All ages welcome
  • Social Media: Follow Bedford Parks & Recreation on Facebook for updates

What to Expect

Gates open at 9 a.m., giving families 45 minutes to collect their free rubber duck and transform it into a racing champion through creative decoration. The actual race launches promptly at 9:45 a.m., with winners determined by aquatic fate and perhaps a touch of engineering genius.

Rare Texas Tradition

Bedford stands among just a handful of Texas cities hosting rubber duck races, making this event particularly special for the Lone Star State. While Rockwall’s Rubber Duck Regatta and Jeep Festival features thousands of ducks racing for prizes including a Jeep, most major Texas cities have yet to embrace this delightful community tradition, giving Bedford residents access to something truly unique in their backyard.

The rubber duck itself boasts surprising historical depth, evolving from Charles Goodyear’s vulcanized rubber innovations in the 1800s to sculptor Peter Ganine’s 1940s design that created the modern bath toy we know today.

Community Connection

Race organizers emphasize the event’s true purpose: strengthening neighborhood bonds through shared laughter and friendly competition. Whether your duck claims victory or simply enjoys the ride, participants join a tradition celebrating community spirit through the universal joy of play.

For more information, contact Bedford Parks & Recreation or check the city’s official website.
