AUSTIN, TX – June 23 is National Typewriter Day, a celebration of the machines that revolutionized writing before computers existed. Though first patented in 1829, the modern typewriter debuted in 1867 near Milwaukee . Throughout the 20th century, they became essential tools for authors, journalists, and students. Even today, writers like George R.R. Martin, Quentin Tarantino, and Jhumpa Lahiri use them and collectors prize restored models like the Olivetti Lettera 32—recently sold for over $254,000

✍️ Why We Still Love Typewriters

Benefit Why It Matters
Creative Process The mechanical tactile feel helps focus and spark creativity.
Heritage Connection Keys link us to personal and societal history—think of teachers, writers, and activists.
Collectible Value Nostalgia meets design; rare machines draw serious interest.

If you’re in Texas this weekend, plan a visit to any of these museums to explore typewriter history—admire, learn, or even type your own message. Whether you’re a writer, tech fan, or history buff, these mechanical relics remind us how far we’ve come—and how much charm we’ve lost along the way.

Happy National Typewriter Day!
