DALLAS, TX — Dallas Animal Services (DAS) has achieved a historic milestone in animal welfare, reporting the largest increase in pet adoptions across the nation in 2024, according to new data released by the Best Friends Animal Society. The agency not only led the state of Texas in adoptions by a significant margin but also ranked 4th nationwide among nearly 4,000 shelters.
In 2024, DAS successfully placed 12,261 pets into loving homes — a remarkable 41% increase over its 2023 numbers. That amounts to 3,580 more adoptions than the previous year, making DAS the top-performing shelter in Texas and a major contributor to the national increase in pet adoptions.
“These numbers represent thousands of lives saved and families made whole,” said Paul Ramon, Director of Dallas Animal Services. “We’re incredibly proud of what this team has accomplished—and we’re just getting started.”
According to the Best Friends Animal Society’s 2024 National Dataset, DAS’s adoption growth accounted for nearly 4% of the national increase in shelter adoptions. Within Texas, DAS outperformed all other reporting shelters by a wide margin, recording over 4,000 more adoptions than the second-highest shelter in El Paso.
A Model for Success
Dallas Animal Services, one of the largest municipal animal shelters in the United States, has invested heavily in improving the adoption process, community engagement, and foster care outreach. Ramon credits the achievement to the dedication of DAS staff, volunteers, and the unwavering support of Dallas residents.
With continued evaluation and community involvement, DAS aims to build on this momentum. “With the community’s support, we expect even more lifesaving impact in 2025,” Ramon added.
