FREEPORT, TEXAS — This summer, the Freeport Historical Museum invites residents and visitors alike to experience a thrilling dive into the deep blue with its newly opened SHARK Exhibit, running now through August 13. Located in the heart of Historic Downtown Freeport, the museum promises an educational, interactive, and entirely free outing perfect for families and curious minds of all ages.
The SHARK Exhibit highlights the ecological importance of sharks, showcasing ten of the ocean’s most well-known species, including the formidable Great White, as well as Blacktip, Bull, and Tiger sharks—species commonly found off the Texas Gulf Coast. Visitors can learn how these apex predators play a vital role in marine ecosystems, view hands-on displays, and try the interactive hammerhead vision station to experience the world through a shark’s eyes.
The museum also features family-friendly photo ops, engaging activities, and plenty of opportunities to explore marine science in an approachable and entertaining setting. Museum admission is completely free, and doors are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
A Museum With Deep Roots
The Freeport Historical Museum was established in 2009 by the late Nat Hickey, a WWII veteran and respected local historian. Hickey envisioned a space where the stories of Freeport’s past could be preserved and shared with future generations. His legacy lives on in this dynamic institution, which underwent a grand re-opening in 2024, featuring updated bilingual exhibits and new collections that span over 300 years of local history.
Visitors can explore original artifacts, photographs, and interpretive panels detailing Freeport’s development, its role in Texas’ coastal economy, and notable institutions like the Freeport Sulphur Company, founded around 1916, which helped shape the region’s industrial landscape.
Freeport: A Coastal Town Full of Character
Founded in 1912, Freeport is nestled at the mouth of the Brazos River and quickly became a bustling hub for shipping, sulfur mining, and fishing. Today, it’s known for its strong ties to the Gulf, a thriving port, and its proximity to beautiful beaches like Bryan Beach. Among the town’s maritime mysteries is the famed Freeport Shrimp Boat, a local relic that sparks curiosity and nostalgia alike.
With over a century of heritage and a modern touch, the Freeport Historical Museum not only tells the story of the past but also connects it to current ecological conversations, such as shark conservation.
