Deep Ellum isn’t just Dallas’s entertainment district – it’s where musical magic was born. This historic freedman’s town nurtured generations of Black musical brilliance, and now you can be part of that incredible legacy with free community guitar classes starting this month.

Where Music History Lives

Deep Ellum’s streets once echoed with the sounds of blues legends like Blind Lemon Jefferson and Lead Belly. This neighborhood has been the heartbeat of Dallas music for over a century, and these new guitar classes honor that rich tradition while creating space for today’s aspiring musicians.

Led by talented instructors Jess Garland and Kierra Gray Thomas, these classes do more than teach chords – they celebrate the voices and stories that shaped American music but too often get overlooked in traditional music education.

Your Musical Journey Starts Here

Ready to strum your way into Deep Ellum’s musical story? Here’s everything you need to know:

  • When: Wednesdays and Fridays, 5:00-6:00 PM
  • Where: Deep Ellum Community Center
  • Who: Ages 8 and up – beginners and experienced players welcome
  • Cost: Completely free
  • Started: August 6th (classes are ongoing!)

Adults and parents are absolutely encouraged to join. Whether you’re 8 or 80, never touched a guitar or used to play in a band, there’s a place for you in this musical community.

Why This Matters for You

These aren’t just guitar lessons – they’re your chance to connect with Deep Ellum’s incredible musical heritage while learning an instrument that opens doors to endless creative possibilities. You’ll be learning in the very neighborhood where blues and jazz legends once walked, played, and created the soundtrack to American culture.

For families, it’s a perfect way to spend quality time together while diving into Dallas history. For adults, it’s a chance to finally pick up that guitar that’s been gathering dust or start a musical journey you’ve always dreamed about.

Join the Musical Legacy

The classes are designed to uplift voices and tell stories that traditional music education often leaves out. You’ll learn guitar techniques while discovering the rich history of the artists who made Deep Ellum a musical destination.

This is community-building at its best – bringing people together through music in a place where music has always brought people together.
