Galveston Is Going Full Steam Ahead This June — and You Need to Dress the Part

Three days, three locations, one alternate universe — the Galveston Steampunk Festival transforms the island into a Victorian-meets-science-fiction wonderland June 5 through 7. Come in costume. Seriously.

There is no festival in Texas quite like this one. The Galveston Steampunk Festival takes the most historically dramatic island on the Gulf Coast — a city literally built by Victorian industrialists using steam-powered machines — and turns it into a full immersive alternate reality for three days every June.

Set against the historic backdrop of Moody Gardens and Galveston’s storied past, the festival transports guests into an alternate history where steam powers the future. Goggles. Corsets. Brass gears. Clockwork contraptions. Waistcoats. Top hats. And a crowd that commits to the aesthetic in a way that makes every single photograph frame-worthy.

The 2026 festival runs Friday, June 5 through Sunday, June 7, across three different Galveston locations.

Why Galveston Is the Perfect Backdrop

Galveston was built by Victorian industrialists who used new machines and new fabrication methods to drive economic development. The extensive history of mechanical innovation displayed in Galveston embodies the steampunk spirit. The island’s historic architecture, its iron-front buildings on the Strand, its grand mansions, and its deep-water port history all feed naturally into the steampunk aesthetic — a genre that imagines an alternate world where Victorian-era steam technology never gave way to electricity or the digital age.

Walking through the Galveston Strand in a steampunk costume is not costume play. It is almost historically accurate.

Three Days, Three Locations

Friday, June 5 brings the Steampunk Pub Crawl through Historic Downtown Galveston — the perfect warm-up for the weekend, hitting the Strand’s best bars and gathering places in full Victorian-futurist regalia.

Saturday, June 6 is the main event at the Moody Gardens Convention Center — the full festival with vendors, entertainment, exhibits, games, presentations, and everything that makes this one of the most visually spectacular events on the Gulf Coast. Kids 7 through 12 have their own pass for all-day Saturday access from noon to 9 p.m.

Sunday, June 7 brings Steampunk Sunday at the League Kempner Mansion — one of Galveston’s most beautiful historic properties, opened for a day of Victorian lawn games, airship races, parasol dueling, tea dueling, croquet, a Steampunk Fortune Teller, a magician, a craft area, and a picnic on the mansion grounds. A Model T group photo kicks off the afternoon at noon. This is the hidden gem of the whole weekend — an intimate, character-complete experience inside a real Victorian mansion.

What You’ll Find at the Main Festival

The festival has something to offer for all ages — authors, live entertainment, demonstrations, games, vendors, presenters, and more. Step back in time through machines, performances, music, costumes, and lectures and immerse yourself in the world of Steampunk. Live music, cosplay, a vendor bazaar, and educational presentations fill the day. Whimsical contraptions and clockwork curiosities fill the exhibit space. Renowned authors and masterful storytellers hold sessions throughout the day. Interactive exhibits brimming with scientific oddities line the hall. And then there’s the cosplay — some of the most elaborate, creative, and genuinely impressive festival costumes in the state of Texas come out for this event.

A Victorian high tea is also available — tea served Victorian style with finger foods and a professional tea talk in a waterfront restaurant setting. Tickets required and separate from general admission.

Come in Costume

This is the festival where showing up in character is not optional — it is expected, celebrated, and rewarded with the best possible crowd energy. First-timers are always welcome in civilian clothes, but regulars will tell you: come in costume, even a simple one, and the experience doubles. From tailored waistcoats and brass-bound goggles to mechanical marvels and melodic spectacles, the Galveston Steampunk Festival is a fully immersive journey into an age of invention and imagination.

Make it a full island weekend — add dinner on the Strand Friday night, the main festival Saturday, and Steampunk Sunday at the mansion. Stay at the Hotel Galvez or the Tremont House for the full Victorian experience.
