More than 30 years running, a record 80,000 visitors last year, and rare U.S. appearances from two internationally acclaimed artists make this year’s Japan Festival Houston one to watch.

Hermann Park, Houston, TX — September 12-13, 2026

Houston’s connection to Japan runs deep, and every September, that friendship spills out across Hermann Park for one of the largest Japanese cultural celebrations in the entire country. Japan Festival Houston returns for its 33rd year, running Saturday, September 12 through Sunday, September 13, both days from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free admission for anyone who wants to attend.

The festival got its start back in 1993, founded by Glen Gondo and originally hosted by the Japan-America Society of Houston. It’s since grown into something genuinely massive, now organized by Japan Festival of Houston Inc. under JASH’s continued guidance, and last year’s event drew a record-breaking 80,000 visitors, a number organizers hope to match or beat again this year.

The festival returns to the shaded grounds around Hermann Park’s Reflection Pool, a setting that won plenty of fans last year for its beautiful oak tree canopy. Once there, visitors can expect a full weekend built around Japanese culture in every form: live musical performances spanning both traditional and contemporary styles, martial arts demonstrations, authentic Japanese cuisine and Japanese-inspired food vendors, and hands-on cultural workshops covering ikebana flower arranging, traditional tea ceremony, origami, and bonsai. There’s also shopping featuring genuine Japanese goods and crafts, along with family-friendly activities and educational programming built for visitors of every age.

This year’s lineup includes a genuine can’t-miss moment for music lovers. Japan Festival Houston 2026 welcomes Yano Akiko, an acclaimed pianist, composer, and vocalist, and Agatsuma Hiromitsu, an internationally renowned shamisen virtuoso, both making rare appearances in the United States. Together, the pair will showcase a blend of contemporary and traditional Japanese music that organizers say makes this one of the most exciting editions in the festival’s history.

Music lovers should also plan an extra stop on Sunday. A separate, free companion program runs at Miller Outdoor Theatre within Hermann Park that same day, produced by the Japan-America Society of Houston in honor of America’s 250th birthday. The program spotlights internationally recognized Japanese artists marking major career milestones, with performances ranging from traditional instrumental pieces to high-energy modern sound.

Admission to the main festival is free, though vendors will charge for food and merchandise, and select hands-on activities, like signing up for a formal tea ceremony or ikebana session, may carry a small fee.

Whether you’re a longtime admirer of Japanese culture or discovering it for the first time, Japan Festival Houston offers a genuinely rich, welcoming weekend under the oaks, celebrating a friendship between two countries that’s been going strong for more than three decades right here in Houston.
