Houston’s Spring Weather Is Too Good to Waste — Get Out on the Water at Discovery Green

Bumper boats and cruiser boats are back on Kinder Lake, and this spring weather is the perfect excuse to go.

Houston has been gifted  one of those rare spring stretches that Texans know not to take for granted — warm without being brutal, breezy without the bugs, and sunny without that relentless summer glare that makes you want to retreat indoors by noon. This is the window. And Discovery Green just handed you the perfect reason to use it.

Bumper boats and cruiser boats are back on Kinder Lake through September 7, open every single day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Whether you want to splash and crash with your crew or glide across the water in style, this is one of the most fun and affordable ways to spend an afternoon in the heart of downtown Houston right now.

Two Ways to Get on the Water

The bumper boats are exactly what they sound like — chaotic, splashy, and completely worth it. Each ride lasts five minutes, seats up to two people, and costs $12. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult and wear life vests, and there’s a combined weight max of 275 pounds per boat.

If you’d rather cruise than crash, the cruiser boats offer a more relaxed 15-minute ride on Kinder Lake for $25. They seat up to five people, making them a great option for families or a laid-back group outing. Children 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult and wear life vests.

Want both? The Boating Bundle gets you a bumper boat plus a cruiser boat for $25 — the best deal on the water.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

All tickets must be purchased online in advance at discoverygreen.auracreative.world. Tickets can be bought ahead of time and used whenever you arrive, which means you can plan your whole afternoon around the park and hop on the water when you’re ready.

To give everyone a full experience, Discovery Green may stop allowing new riders up to an hour before closing time. The recommendation is to arrive early, especially on busy spring weekends when the weather is this good and the whole city has the same idea.

Why Right Now Is the Best Time

Spring in Houston has a short sweet spot — after the cold fronts and before the heavy humidity and heat of June, July, and August settle in. Right now the park is lush, the temperature is comfortable without being oppressive, and the bugs haven’t fully arrived yet. Kinder Lake sits on the north side of the park near the Anheuser-Busch stage, spreading over more than an acre in one of the most beautifully designed urban green spaces in Texas. Pair a boat ride with a walk through the park, a stop at one of Discovery Green’s on-site restaurants, or a picnic on the lawn and you’ve got a full afternoon.

Discovery Green hosts more than 600 free events each year, so check the full calendar before you visit — there’s almost always something happening alongside the boats.
