The Justice Department announced on July 22nd the seizure of approximately $2 million in digital currency connected to Buy Cash Money and Money Transfer Company (BuyCash), a financial operation that served as a pipeline for funding some of the world’s most dangerous terrorist groups.

The Deadly Network Behind the Money

BuyCash and its owner Ahmed M. M. Alaqad didn’t just move money – they enabled violence on a massive scale. Since 2017, this Gaza-based operation has financially supported Hamas, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda affiliates, organizations collectively responsible for thousands of civilian deaths across the globe.

Hamas alone has orchestrated decades of suicide bombings, rocket attacks on civilian populations, and the horrific October 2023 assault on Israel that killed over 1,200 people, including entire families murdered in their homes. ISIS conducted a reign of terror that included mass executions, sexual slavery, and attacks that killed hundreds in Paris, Brussels, and other cities worldwide.

How Cryptocurrency Became a Terror Tool

The scheme was sophisticated and deliberately designed to hide the blood money. Users would fund accounts at major exchanges like Binance, then transfer USDT (Tether) to unhosted wallet addresses, making the terrorist financing nearly invisible to traditional tracking methods.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi made the stakes clear: “Terrorist organizations like Hamas and their affiliates rely on shadowy financial networks to fund their deadly operations. By seizing millions in cryptocurrency, the Justice Department is aggressively dismantling the financial infrastructure of terrorism.”

One account alone received at least $4 million to support Hamas operations – money that directly translated into weapons, explosives, and training for attacks targeting innocent civilians.

The Trail of Terror Funding

The investigation revealed BuyCash’s extensive support for multiple terrorist organizations:

2017: The company procured large quantities of online infrastructure for ISIS, the group that beheaded journalists, burned prisoners alive, and threw suspected homosexuals from rooftops.

2019: BuyCash received funds from a known Al-Qaeda affiliate – the same organization behind the September 11 attacks that killed nearly 3,000 Americans.

2019-2021: Direct financial transfers to Hamas, which has fired thousands of rockets at Israeli schools, hospitals, and residential areas while using Palestinian civilians as human shields.

The Human Cost of Terror Finance

Every dollar that flowed through BuyCash represented potential violence against innocent people. Hamas uses funding to purchase rockets fired indiscriminately at civilian populations, to dig terror tunnels beneath schools and hospitals, and to pay stipends to families of suicide bombers – creating financial incentives for mass murder.

ISIS used similar funding streams to establish a “caliphate” where they executed thousands, sold women and children into slavery, and carried out attacks from London to Sri Lanka that killed and maimed hundreds of innocents.

Al-Qaeda affiliates, supported by these same financial networks, continue plotting attacks against Western targets while terrorizing local populations across Africa and the Middle East.

Stopping the Money, Stopping the Violence

FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the life-and-death importance of this work: “Our message is that terrorists cannot hide behind digital currency to bankroll their operations. The FBI and our partners will continue our efforts to cut off the flow of money and – most importantly – stop the violence committed by Hamas and their affiliates.”

This seizure represents more than frozen assets – it means fewer rockets fired at school buses, fewer bombs in crowded markets, fewer families torn apart by terrorist violence.

The Ongoing Fight

The $2 million seizure is just one victory in a larger battle. Terrorist organizations continuously adapt their financing methods, exploiting new technologies and financial systems to fund their campaigns of murder and intimidation.

But this case sends a clear message: American law enforcement will pursue terrorist financing wherever it leads, using every available tool to protect innocent lives from those who profit from death and destruction.

The investigation continues, with authorities working to identify and disrupt additional financial networks that enable terrorism’s deadliest practitioners to operate across the globe.
