LAREDO, TEXAS — The Laredo Police Department will host a free Coffee with a Cop event, Saturday, June 21, from 8–10 a.m Jacaman McDonalds, 2515 Jacaman Rd. Attendees can enjoy complimentary coffee, engage with officers, and receive EZ Child ID cards—all in an informal, friendly setting aimed at promoting dialogue and strengthening community relationships .
A Community-Building Initiative
This outreach program began in 2011 with the Hawthorne Police Department in California and has since spread nationwide. In Laredo, it became a monthly staple in early 2025, with the first held in January and subsequent events in February, March, and April. The initiative is crafted to break down barriers between law enforcement and the public in non-crisis, casual environments.
“The main goal … is to have conversations … on how we can better serve the community,” said Sgt. Jonathan Castillo. “The best way to progress is to involve everybody.”
Event Impact and Community Feedback
Participants at previous Coffee with a Cop gatherings have praised the program as an effective means to voice concerns—like stray animals, street lighting, and neighborhood safety—and see tangible follow-up from law enforcement. The presence of the elderly and cross-border visitors underscores Laredo’s diverse community engagement.
