The largest Vietnamese festival in Texas marks its fifth year and the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association’s 35th anniversary with a packed day of food, competition, and cultural celebration.

Houston’s Vietnamese community is throwing its biggest party of the year this Saturday, and it’s bringing everything from a robotics build to a live chess match against a titled player. The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association presents the fifth annual Việt Cultural Fest at NRG Center, marking both a milestone year for the festival and the organization’s 35th anniversary of service to the community.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at NRG Center, located at 1 NRG Park in Houston. Tickets run $15 for general admission (ages 4 and up), with a discounted $12 rate for seniors 65 and older, and groups of 10 or more also paying $12 per person. Tickets can be purchased online ahead of time at vietculturalfest.org.
This year’s theme, Taste of Vietnam, centers the festival around the country’s food traditions, spotlighting cuisine from Vietnam’s north, central, and south regions through cultural exhibitions and tastings. True to that theme, the festival’s must-see lineup includes a Phở Eating Contest, a Blind Boba Tasting, a Blind Coffee Tasting, and a full cooking competition, alongside plenty of local and national Vietnamese-owned businesses and restaurants on site.
Beyond the food, the festival gets surprisingly ambitious. A six-hour robotics build runs throughout the day, and chess fans can watch a simultaneous exhibition match against a titled player. Families can also enjoy a children’s national costume contest, a teen pageant, cultural games, and a variety of other tournaments and contests scattered throughout the grounds.
The festival isn’t just entertainment, either. Organizers are also providing community services throughout the day, including a free health fair and legal consultations, giving attendees practical resources alongside the celebration.
Việt Cultural Fest has grown steadily since its founding in 2019 by three young Vietnamese Americans who wanted to reconnect with their cultural roots and give a louder voice to Houston’s Vietnamese community. The very first festival drew more than 7,000 attendees. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event returned in 2023 and has grown every year since, pulling in more than 11,000 attendees in recent years. Organizers are anticipating a crowd of roughly 15,000 for this year’s fifth edition.
