Shakespeare Under the Stars: The Palo Duro Canyon Secret Most Texans Have Never Heard Of

One night a week this July, the cast of the famous TEXAS Outdoor Musical trades the frontier for the Bard — performing Shakespeare on a stage carved into the second-largest canyon in the country

Here’s a Texas treasure hiding in plain sight, neighbor. You’ve probably heard of the TEXAS Outdoor Musical, the beloved summer show that’s been telling the story of the Panhandle for nearly 60 years. But did you know that on quiet weeknights in July, that same stage transforms into something completely different — and a whole lot of Texans have never caught it?

It’s called Shakespeare in the Canyon, and it might be the most magical night out in the entire Panhandle.

The setting alone is worth the drive. The Pioneer Amphitheatre sits at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon — the second-largest canyon in the United States, right behind the Grand Canyon — with 600-foot painted cliffs rising up behind the stage. As the West Texas sky fades from gold to deep blue and the stars come out, the talented cast of TEXAS swaps cowboy boots for Shakespeare and brings one of the Bard’s comedies roaring to life against that natural backdrop. There’s nothing else like it in the state.

And don’t let “Shakespeare” scare you off if you think it’s stuffy. The company picks the fun stuff — crowd-pleasing comedies full of mistaken identities, sparring sweethearts, and laugh-out-loud mischief. It’s the kind of show that wins over folks who swore they didn’t like Shakespeare. Bring the family, bring a date, bring your friends who need to get out more.

The series runs on Tuesday evenings in July, on the TEXAS cast’s nights off from the big musical. That makes it a perfect excuse to turn a single trip to the canyon into a whole adventure: hike the rugged trails by day, grab a bite in nearby Canyon or Amarillo, then settle into the amphitheater as the sun goes down. A few smart tips — bring a light layer because the canyon cools off after dark, pack bug spray, and arrive early to soak in the scenery before the show starts. And remember, the shows go on rain or shine, so check the forecast and dress for the evening.

If you’ve lived in Texas your whole life and never made it out to Palo Duro for a night like this, consider this your nudge. Round up your people, point the car toward the Panhandle, and go see Shakespeare the way nobody else in the country gets to — under a canyon full of stars.

If You Go

Shakespeare in the Canyon takes the stage at the Pioneer Amphitheatre inside Palo Duro Canyon State Park, 11450 Park Road 5, Canyon, TX 79015, about 30 miles southeast of Amarillo. Performances run on Tuesday evenings in July, on the TEXAS Outdoor Musical’s off nights. Shows go on rain or shine, and a Texas Parks and Wildlife park entry fee applies on top of your ticket. For this year’s play title, exact July dates, showtimes, and tickets, visit texas-show.com or call the box office at 806-655-2181.
