A vintage steam train through the Piney Woods, exotic cars in River Oaks, free fishing day across the state, coffee and motorcycles in Houston, and the best BBQ brunch money can buy — here is the Texas Father’s Day guide for dads who deserve more than a card.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21, 2026. Texas has more genuinely great ways to celebrate dad than any other state in the country — and most of them will create a better memory than anything wrapped in a box. Here is your complete guide, from East Texas to the Hill Country.

Take Dad on a Steam Train Through the Piney Woods — Palestine and Rusk

This is the one that separates Texas from everywhere else. The Texas State Railroad’s Father’s Day Lunch Excursion departs from the Palestine Railroad Depot on June 20 at 11 a.m. for a four-hour round-trip journey through the East Texas Piney Woods aboard a vintage steam train. The train travels to the Rusk Depot, where guests deboard for a savory catered Father’s Day Lunch on the beautifully decorated lakeside grounds.

Every guest in every seating class receives a complimentary champagne or sparkling cider toast and appetizer upon departure. Five seating classes are available — from standard to premium — and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase onboard.

This is four hours of genuine, unplugged, screen-free family time on one of the most scenic rail corridors in the South. If dad loves trains, history, or the East Texas woods — or if he just deserves something he’d never plan for himself — this is it.

Date: Saturday, June 20, 2026, departing at 11 a.m. Departure: Palestine Railroad Depot, Palestine, TX 75801 Phone: 1-855-632-7729 Email: [email protected] Website: texasstaterailroad.net

Ride a Steam Train in East Texas — Jefferson Railway

In Jefferson, a second historic steam train option runs its annual Father’s Day excursion on June 21 — and this one includes a stop at the Diamond Don Gator Pit for an alligator feeding. Jefferson is one of the most preserved 19th-century towns in Texas, and a Father’s Day in the Piney Woods on a steam train with gators is genuinely unlike anything else in the state.

Free Fishing Day — Everywhere in Texas, June 21

One of Texas’s most beloved Father’s Day traditions costs absolutely nothing. Texas Parks and Wildlife designates a Free Fishing Day every year on the Saturday or Sunday nearest Father’s Day — allowing all Texas residents and non-residents to fish in public waters without a fishing license. No stamp required. No fee. Just a rod, some bait, and however long you want to stay.

It is one of the most accessible and genuinely enjoyable Father’s Day traditions in the state — particularly for families with kids who have never fished before, or grandads who just want a reason to sit by the water with someone they love.

Check tpwd.texas.gov before heading out to confirm the 2026 Free Fishing Day date and any water-specific rules.

Coffee and Vintage Motorcycles — Wolfsmiths, Houston

For the dad who appreciates things that are built to last, Wolfsmiths on Washington Avenue combines a seriously good café with a curated collection of vintage motorcycles. It’s not a Father’s Day event so much as a Father’s Day destination — a coffee and a stroll through beautiful machines on a Sunday morning before whatever else the day holds.

Location: Wolfsmiths, 1904 Washington Ave., Houston, TX 77007 Hours: Check Google for current Sunday hours

Austin — Lake Travis, BBQ, and Free Concerts

Austin gives Father’s Day the full treatment. Lake Travis Zipline Adventures offers a genuinely thrilling experience for active dads — multiple zipline courses over Hill Country terrain and lake views that last for miles. Boat rentals on Lake Travis start early and fill up by midday, so book in advance. Perry’s Steakhouse in the Domain is one of the best Father’s Day brunch reservations in the city — call now, they fill up weeks ahead.

For dads who’d rather eat legendary BBQ than a prix-fixe brunch, Franklin Barbecue and Terry Black’s are both open Sunday mornings and the lines are part of the experience.

The Austin Symphonic Band performs a free Father’s Day concert at Zilker Hillside Theater on June 21 — blanket on the grass, the city skyline visible in the trees, and music under the sky. Free.

Hill Country — Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, and the Open Road

A Father’s Day Hill Country road trip is one of the most timeless Texas traditions — and it works every single year. Fredericksburg to Luckenbach to Enchanted Rock, with winery stops along Highway 290 and cold beer under the oak trees in Luckenbach at the end of the afternoon. No reservations needed. No agenda required. Just the road and whoever is riding shotgun.

For the dad who has never driven Highway 290 through wine country in June, this is the gift.

Luckenbach Texas: 412 Luckenbach Town Loop, Fredericksburg, TX 78624 Enchanted Rock: 16710 Ranch Rd 965, Fredericksburg, TX 78624 — reserve in advance at tpwd.texas.gov

San Antonio — Brunch at La Cantera

SweetFire Kitchen at La Cantera and Sunny’s: All Day Brunch and Bar in Boerne are two of the best Father’s Day brunch options in the San Antonio area — the former set in the open-air La Cantera shopping resort, the latter a short scenic drive northwest into the Hill Country. Both require reservations and both tend to fill up weeks ahead.

SweetFire Kitchen: 15900 La Cantera Pkwy., San Antonio, TX 78256 Sunny’s: 122 S. Main St., Boerne, TX 78006
