South Dallas Cultural Center Is Having Its Most Exciting Month Yet — and Artists, This One’s for You Too

May at SDCC brings new exhibitions, community programs, hands-on workshops, and five open calls with a June 1 deadline — here’s everything happening at one of Dallas’s most important cultural institutions.

If you haven’t been to the South Dallas Cultural Center lately, May is the month to go. Located at 3400 S. Fitzhugh Avenue across from Fair Park, SDCC is in full spring stride — new programming, fresh exhibitions, returning community favorites, and an open call opportunity for artists that closes June 1.

The center’s mission is as clear as it is powerful: celebrate Black culture, honor the African diaspora, and create space for the makers, performers, storytellers, and neighbors who shape the cultural heartbeat of South Dallas. Every program, every exhibition, every workshop serves that mission — and May is one of the most packed months of the season.

Artists — Five Open Calls Are Live Right Now

This is the announcement South Dallas artists have been waiting for. SDCC is currently accepting applications across five distinct opportunities to be part of their upcoming season. The deadline for all five is June 1, 2026.

The five open calls are the Core Group Track, Project Proposals, Exhibition Proposals, Artist in Residence, and Mural Project. Whether you are a visual artist looking for gallery space, a performing arts group seeking a platform, a community organizer with a project idea, or a muralist ready to make your mark on South Dallas — there is an opportunity here for you.

SDCC invites artists to join a dynamic community and bring their vision to life. Applications are submitted through linktr.ee/southdallasculturalcenter. The deadline is June 1 — do not wait.

What’s Happening at SDCC This May

May at SDCC marks a season of momentum, creativity, and community pride. As the campus moves toward summer, the schedule is buzzing with new programs, returning favorites, and artistic explorations that honor both heritage and innovation. From outdoor gatherings to immersive workshops and fresh exhibitions, May invites visitors to engage deeply, discover something new, and celebrate the artistry of South Dallas.

The center’s late-spring programs fill quickly — RSVP early for anything that requires registration. The full calendar is updated regularly at sdcc.dallasculture.org and through the center’s GovDelivery email newsletter.

About South Dallas Cultural Center

SDCC is a municipal, multi-purpose arts facility and a division of the City of Dallas Office of Arts and Culture. The center presents performing, literary, and visual arts programs that celebrate the creativity, vibrancy, and diversity of the African diaspora — through exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, community programs, and the Gwendolyn Brooks Library on-site.

The center is also home to programming connected to the Juanita J. Craft Civil Rights House, honoring the legacy of one of Dallas’s most important civil rights leaders and connecting that history to the ongoing work of the center’s artists and community members.
