Get ready to be completely mesmerized. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston just unveiled one of the most breathtaking textile collections you’ll ever see – and it’s happening right here in your backyard.

“From India to the World: Textiles from the Parpia Collection” isn’t just another museum exhibition. This is your chance to walk through centuries of Indian artistry, from intricate embroideries that took master craftsmen months to complete to silks so fine they seem to shimmer with their own light.

Two Amazing Ways to Experience This Magic

Saturday Members Tour – Next Weekend!

Saturday, July 19 | 1-2 PM
Meet in the Beck Building lobby

If you’re an MFAH member, you get the VIP treatment with a free docent-led tour next Saturday. These guides know every thread, every technique, every story behind these incredible pieces. You’ll discover how these textiles traveled ancient trade routes and influenced fashion across continents.

Not a member yet? This might be the perfect reason to join!

Meet a Master Craftsman in Person

Wednesday, July 16 | 4-5 PM
American General Conference Room (Beck Building Mezzanine)

Here’s something truly special: Asif Shaikh, one of India’s most celebrated textile artists, is flying in from Ahmedabad to share his craft with you. This master embroiderer will show you the actual tools, materials, and techniques used to create these stunning works.

Shaikh isn’t just any artist – he’s the creative genius behind textiles for World Heritage sites and the founder of CDS Art Foundation. You’ll see samples of his work, learn about his studio in Gujarat, and get an insider’s look at how these masterpieces come to life.

Bonus: After the lecture, you’ll get a guided tour of the exhibition – so you can see the textiles with completely new eyes.

Take the Beauty Home With You

While you’re soaking up all this textile magnificence, don’t miss the MFA Shop Trunk Show running through September 14.

Designer Amanpreet Birgisson has curated an exclusive collection of vintage silk sarees, phulkaris, and traditional shawls from the 19th and 20th centuries. Birgisson, an architect based in Washington D.C., combines her design background with a deep passion for preserving Indian textile traditions.

What makes this collection special? Birgisson has spent years “compiling her tremendous collection of vintage textiles and articles from around the world,” and now she’s sharing these treasures with Houston. Each piece tells a story, and you can actually own a piece of this incredible heritage.

A Feast for All Your Senses Awaits

This isn’t just about pretty fabrics. These textiles represent centuries of cultural exchange, artistic mastery, and human creativity. The Parpia Collection is considered one of the most significant private collections of Indian textiles outside of India itself.

Think about it – you’re looking at pieces that influenced global fashion, traveled ancient trade routes, and were created by hands that passed down techniques through generations. It’s living history you can touch and feel.

Make Your Plans Now

For the Members Tour: Just show up Saturday, July 19 at 1 PM in the Beck Building lobby. It’s free with membership.

For the Master Craftsman Lecture: Included with museum admission. First-come, first-served seating, so arrive early!

Questions? Call the members hotline at 713.639.7550 or email [email protected]

The Bottom Line

When’s the last time you had the chance to experience centuries of artistic mastery in one afternoon? These textiles have traveled from India to New York and now to Houston – don’t let them leave without experiencing their magic yourself.

Whether you’re into fashion, history, art, or just love beautiful things, this exhibition will leave you inspired and amazed. Pack your curiosity and prepare to see the world through silk.
