Texans have been driving change—literally—for 25 years. In celebration of a quarter-century of Conservation License Plates, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is spotlighting the more than $12 million raised for parks, wildlife, and natural habitats through specialty plate sales. From the beloved Horned Lizard to the striking Monarch Butterfly and mighty Largemouth Bass, these plates do more than add flair to your vehicle—they fund conservation across the Lone Star State.
A License to Help
Whether you’re a nature lover, angler, hunter, or just proud of the state you call home, there’s a specialty plate for you. Currently, TPWD offers 11 bold designs—each one linked to a specific cause and conservation project.
“These plates make a real difference,” said a TPWD spokesperson. “Every mile you drive with one helps support Texas wildlife, rivers, parks, and educational programs. They’re not just decorative—they’re impactful.”
Where the Money Goes
Bluebonnet and Camping Plates
Support Texas State Parks. Funds go toward refillable water bottle stations, interpretive exhibits, Buffalo Soldiers community outreach, cultural and natural resource projects.
Wildlife Plates (Monarch Butterfly, Horned Lizard, Hummingbird, Rattlesnake)
Support Texas’ non-game wildlife, such as the ocelot, red wolf, Attwater’s prairie-chicken, and even rare plants like the Mariposa cactus. Projects include tortoise repatriation, mud turtle genetic analysis, and prairie dog reintroduction.
White-tailed Deer and Desert Bighorn Sheep Plates
Back big game management and research, including deer and pronghorn surveys, and habitat studies in arid regions of West Texas.
Largemouth Bass Plates
Promote bass fishing and freshwater habitat improvements. Current projects include habitat enhancements at Lake Brownwood and Bois d’Arc Lake.
Texas Rivers Plates
Protect Texas waterways through initiatives like the River Access and Conservation Areas Program and Conserving Texas Rivers Initiative.
Greater Roadrunner Plates
Support birding, nature tourism, and habitat improvements in parks like Dinosaur Valley and Hazel Bazemore.
