Texas Bill Seeks to Expand Ban on Gender Transition Treatments to Adults

A new bill introduced in the Texas legislature aims to extend the state’s existing ban on gender transition treatments for minors to include all adults. Filed by Republican Rep. Brent Money, H.B. 3399 proposes altering the law’s language by replacing “child” with “person,” effectively prohibiting gender-affirming medical procedures and treatments for all Texans.

If passed, the bill would bar surgeries and puberty blockers used for gender transition, with limited exceptions for individuals with certain genetic conditions and children prescribed puberty blockers to facilitate typical development. Those already undergoing such treatments would be required to taper off them under medical supervision.

Texas, home to an estimated 93,000 transgender adults, already enforces restrictions on transition care for minors following a 2023 law signed by Gov. Greg Abbott. That law faced legal challenges but was upheld by the Texas Supreme Court. Similar restrictions exist in at least 25 other states.
