Texas Honors Victims of Communism

Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill approving the construction of a monument honoring the victims of communism at the State Capitol Complex in Austin. State Representative Tom Oliverson co-authored the bill. He said he hopes the monument will remind Texans of the true legacy of communism.

The Texas State Legislature has approved a resolution to establish November 7 as “Victims of Communism Memorial Day” in honor of those who have died and suffered under communist regimes.

Andrew Bremberg, President and CEO of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC), along with the VOC Board of Trustees, commended the Texas Legislature for passing this significant legislation that commemorates the victims of communism.

“The Texas State Legislature’s recognition of VOC Memorial Day is a significant achievement. We hope more states will adopt this important day,” said Ambassador Bremberg.

By passing H.B. 1057, Texas has become the fourth state to officially recognize November 7 as “Victims of Communism Memorial Day,” led by Representative Tom Oliverson in the House and Senator Brandon Creighton in the Senate. Governor Greg Abbott is expected to sign the bill soon.

So far, Alabama, Utah, Virginia, and now Texas have passed resolutions recognizing November 7 as “Victims of Communism Memorial Day.” Nine other states, including Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, are also working to enact similar recognition.

Representative Tom Oliverson emphasized the significance of remembering the victims of communism, stating that “more than 100 million innocent people have lost their lives at the hands of communist regimes since the establishment of the first communist regime on November 7, 1917, in Russia. This marks the greatest loss of human life in history, and it is crucial that we do not forget the atrocities of communism. Similar to how Holocaust memorials remind us of the dangers of fascism, this memorial serves as a solemn reminder of the false promises of communism and the enduring legacy of human suffering it has caused.”
