Forget the Hollywood version of cowboys for a minute. This Saturday, July 26th, you can experience the real deal at Fort Concho National Historic Landmark in San Angelo—and they’re throwing in free breakfast to sweeten the deal.

What’s Happening

When: Saturday, July 26, 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM (but the party keeps going until 4:00 PM)
Where: Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, San Angelo
Cost: Free (seriously, everything’s free)

Here’s your morning timeline:

9:00 AM: The Western Art Show opens in Barracks 6 with 50 paintings from six artists—plus breakfast pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. These aren’t random artists either; they were handpicked by last year’s visitors, so you know the art’s good.

9:30 AM: Laura Huckaby from the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts gives a gallery talk. Translation: you’ll actually understand what makes these Western paintings special instead of just nodding and pretending.

10:00 AM: The Concho Cowboys perform live in the courtyard. Think authentic cowboy entertainment, not dinner theater.

Why This Matters

Fort Concho isn’t just any old tourist stop—it’s where real cowboys and soldiers lived and worked in the 1800s. So when they celebrate National Cowboy Day, they’re doing it on actual historic ground where cowboys once rode.

The Western Art Show features work that captures the genuine spirit of the American Plains, not the sanitized version you see in gift shops. All the paintings are for sale too, with proceeds benefiting both the artists and Fort Concho’s preservation efforts.

The Art Show Continues

Can’t make it Saturday morning? No problem. The Western Art Show runs through Sunday, August 3rd:

  • Tuesdays-Saturdays: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Sundays: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM

That gives you plenty of time to come back and actually buy something if a piece catches your eye during the free breakfast event.

Getting There

Fort Concho is right in San Angelo—easy to find, easy to park, and they’ve got everything set up so you can walk from the art show to the cowboy performance without missing a beat.

The Bottom Line

How often do you get to eat free breakfast while looking at genuine Western art in an actual historic fort, then watch real cowboys perform where cowboys actually lived 150 years ago?

This Saturday morning in San Angelo, you can do all three. And unlike most weekend activities, this one’s completely free and educational enough that you’ll actually learn something cool to tell people later.

Show up at 9 AM, grab some coffee and pastries, and celebrate National Cowboy Day the way it should be celebrated—with real history, real art, and real cowboys.
